How to copy and stitch a large chart

I don't know if this is a proper forum for this question but I have to try. If it isn't, perhaps some one could direct me to the proper forum, software or web site.

I have a very old chart which is approximately 3' X 15" and, because it's old and brittle, I want to reproduce it on fresh paper (full size). Currently, I have a Canon printer with copying capability. The Canon Image Garden has a stitch function but I've never done this before. Because I'd like to end up with a full size reproduction, I think this complicates my project. Could anyone point me in the right direction, please? Thank you..........

If it is old and brittle I would be concerned that trying to copy multiple times could tear the paper. Perhaps going to a copy center where they could do copy all in one shot would be best?

It's not *that* brittle - but I just have to be careful as I handle it. Going to a copy store would be an option - but I'd like to try doing it myself first.

You do not state what size your printer-copier can work with.

If, as I assume, your printer cannot handle 3 foot by 15 inch paper then I think you will never be satisified by any amount of partial scanning then image stitching followed by partial printing & paper stitching.
- Just save yourself the agony and go to the local printer shop to find out what they can handle.
- While you're there, don't just get copies done. Get them to make a scan for you so you can keep a backup on your computer, send copies to relatives etc.

It is, of course, possible that their equipment cannot handle 3 foot by 15 inch paper either. In that case you could ask their advice about identifying somebody who can hande the job.

I went through all this a few years ago when I tried to save money by getting an A4 [roughly equal to std US letter size] printer to replace the veteran A3 [double the size] printer that had just given up the ghost. I eventually accepted that only proper A3 equipment could do the work so I did what I am now suggesting that you do.

Photograph it and stitch the multiple photos together-post #2- or have it done professionally.

Nothing much lost by trying it, if you have a decent camera and a way of mounting it, except time. If it doesn't work out, get it done elsewhere.

Thanks for your advice (and experience). Guess that's what I'll do and prevent a huge headache trying to do it myself.
