Using the file explorer address bar

I typed an entry incorrectly into the File Explorer address bar and it gave me a dropdown menu underneath giving me the option to search for it so I selected to search for it (in the address bar not the Search box on the far right).
I then got a Windows Security window which said Connect to Bing.com (with connecting to Bing.com underneath it). The window was asking for a Username and Password. What username and password was it requesting?... because I clicked on Cancel and was taken to Bing search. Is this normal behaviour? Its something I've never come across before.
What is the Search option that comes up in the address bar dropdown menu capable of searching for..because it took me straight to Bing?

I don't remember seeing this before either. Perhaps now what happens when using a local account?

Anything typed there that is not capable of being interpreted as a valid file system path is treated as an internet address.

You probably know that- perhaps you could post a screenshot.

What is your Windows build number - as you were prompted to include by the forum?

On 1903 with a MS account I don't get a login prompt.

Im not aware how the address bar is supposed to work in File Explorer. Its the first time Ive ever tried typing anything in to it!! lol I sign into my PC with a Microsoft Account..Is that the username and password it was asking for with the login prompt. It sent me over to Bing anyway even when I selected to cancel?

I use a Local Account, and when canceled, took me to Bing anyway as well. I'm surprised with a MS Logon it's wants some account info. I would imagine from the prompt dialog it's something that would get stored in the Control Panel > Credential Manger under Web Credentials:



As a side track you'll probably like me, check under Windows Credentials, where you'll see some Generic entries that seem odd, with the same random 'User name' Id's . Seeing them after clean installs, and from what I'd read, they're standard issue. And as I recall, if you delete them they'll just reappear

Ive no passwords at all listed for web credentials and no windows credentials at all either. There are a few generic credentials under windows credentials like you said. I wonder if when I cancelled at the Windows Security-Bing screen that it took me over to Bing anyway without entering a password because Im using my Admin account so credentials werent required..just guessing?

My guess is doesn't really care about it being Admin or not.

In general all the major players, like Google and Amazon now prefer being able to tie your searches to account ids under their banner of 'Improving your user experience'.

And so it makes a stab with this prompt at getting the credentials of those who might be worried about needing one, and if you don't, it still want's your internet traffic to Bing.

Of course this then begs the question, 'If you're already logged in with a Microsoft Account why not use that?'. Maybe it's a legal issue.

When I click for information on the picture, I then sign in to my Microsoft Account and I am taken straight onto Edge browser where there are loads more links and info related to the pic

Its definitely a weird one. Maybe just a legal issue or a bug that hasnt been sorted out yet
