Windows stuck in "Attempting repair" boot up screen

Today I moved my desktop PC to a different house. I don't have ethernet access there so I used a wifi USB adapter. I installed the drivers, it connected well but after a few minutes it disconnected, so I restarted the computer. It didn't connect to the wifi either, so I restarted it again. This time the Asus BIOS screen showed up, but instead of going away quickly like always it stayed there, not sure why. I didn't know what to do there, so I restarted it again (from the button), that's probably where I messed up.

This time, after the brief BIOS screen, a black screen with the Windows logo appeared, first with a "preparing automatic repair" message, then "diagnosing your PC" and then "attempting repair"... and it's stuck there. Maybe those aren't the correct translations sinct it's in Spanish but that's what it says more or less. I've tried waiting for hours (nothing happens, it stays in that screen loading), and restarting my computer from the button, the same screen appears. Both with the wifi adapter and without it, probably it doesn't matter but I had to try.

I've searched this message and looks like when this screen appears it can be lots of different reasons with many different solutions, so hopefully with what I've told you someone could help me choose the best one and what to do. Maybe what caused this is when I restarted the computer when the BIOS appeared and stayed there? (but also why did that happen on the first place??) Or less probable but it could have something to do with the usb wifi adapter, or its drivers or something? Or the wifi connection not working?

I have lots of stressful things going on right now and this is the last thing I needed... so if someone could help me I'd really appreciate it. Thank you in advance!

Edit: I've managed to find an ethernet connection to see if it's a problem of the wifi adapter or derived from that, but the problem is still there so looks like that doesn't affect it. I've also disconnected every peripheric besides the keyboard and the display, and nothing changes.

How old is this MB?

Have you ever replaced CMOS battery? (Coin battery, likely CR2032)

If BIOS screen appears on each boot and sits there it wants you to take action. I'l bet the date and time are not set.

Press DEL to enter BIOS. Date and time are likely on first screen. Set them properly and then press F10 to save and exit.


Replacing the coin battery is something you can do but be careful as these are semi delicate parts. Your manual should walk you through process.

You might also ensure in the move something didn't get knocked out of position or loose in case.

Heavy video cards may need to be reseated.

Hopefully it will boot pass Asus BIOS screen. Then you can tell us where it is stopping next.

Assuming I looked up correct machine your battery is here.

Sounds like battery is still okay. I would swap when you get more settled.


So when you boot, or power on, does it still stopping at Asus BIOS screen?


If so I would remove and reseat cards, connectors and memory. Something is off if it stopping on the screen.


I notice in your screen shot if you hit TAB it will display "POST" messages. What errors, if any, are you getting during POST.

Your BIOS sounds fine. Resetting to defaults normally doesn't cause issues as most people just run on the defaults.

Yes I would use bootable media to enter Advance Startup Options.

You could try System Restore assuming you are using restore points.

A using a restore point will not cause data loss. It basically is restore the registry to that point in time.

In your case you would use a restore point just before move.


So this is System Restore not Windows reset.

System Restore is disabled by default in Windows 10, at least on every Windows 10 system I've setup.

To enable it,

Right click on This PC and select Properties.
Click Advanced system settings at left.
Click the System protection tab.
Select the boot drive then click the Configure button.
Select Turn on system protection and click OK.
Click Create to make your first restore point.
Others should be created as needed.
