    My Windows 10 FILE EXPLORER refuses to KEEP "DETAIL" as the DEFAULT


    This is not a new problem, and I am not the only one having it. The Internet has lots of posts asking the same question "how do we make the File Explorer KEEP DETAIL AS THE DEFAULT.

    In the ICON VIEW, the file name is hard to read and the icon takes up too much window space. Lots of posts will tell you how to MAKE IT DETAILS BUT on the next folder opening, UP POPS the blankity blank ICON.

    Some posts asking how to keep DETAIL as the DEFAULT goes back over 8 years. I think for me, it has not been fixed in over 10 years.

    Has anyone found a way to make DEFAULT STAY AS "DETAILS"? Even better, anyone found a way to DELETE "ICONS" view COMPLETELY from File Explorer.

    You're not going to delete the icon view option, but you can set Details as the default.

    @jagman, you need to copy the registry code KeithM shows (all of it) then open Notepad and paste it in there.
    Click File, Save as and save it to your Desktop as MakeDetailModeDefault.reg and change Save as type to All files (*.*)

    Go to your Desktop, right click on MakeDetailModeDefault.reg and select Merge. That will add it to the registry. I don't know if it fixes the problem or not but that is how you use the data KeithM entered.

    Is this still relevant?


    Does line 3 take out 'bags'... if so there's a lot of stuff, on my PC, in there. Would be nice to implement if possible. Any comments appreciated.

    Yes, still relevant. File Explorer works the same way from Windows 7 through Windows 11. Yes, line 3 deletes the Bags key. That's necessary to set a default view, either via the Streams/Default key or the FolderType key. Not sure what you want to implement, but anything you want to set in regards to File Explorer views can be done with:

    WinSetView v2

    It's just an easier way to clear/set the same File Explorer registry values that have been documented here and on other sites over the years.
