Windows 10 not showing the actual Icon in small icon view  

Hi there,

after looking for hours on Google to resolve my Issue, I decided to try my luck here. Because I haven't had any luck so far.

The problem:


On the left you see my file explorer Windows 10 latest update (2004/19041) [on 1903 I had the same issue] . On right you see the same folder being opened on my Server running Windows Server 2012. Note that the Win10 machine doesn't show the actual Icon itself. If I switch to medium, large, extra large view the Icons will be shown. Just not in small icons or details view.

I have tried adjusting Thumbnail cache size, applying the registry fix for broken icon filetypes, resetting the Iconcache, turning thumbnail preview off and on, updating to a new windows build, resetting all Folder Options. Nothing helped.

Any and all help in resolving this issue is greatly appreachiated, because it's driving me nuts. I am working on Icons and I need to see them in small size.

Option One: To Turn On or Off Thumbnail Previews in File Explorer Options
Option Two: To Turn On or Off Thumbnail Previews in Visual Effects Settings
Option Three: To Turn On or Off Thumbnail Previews using a BAT file
Option Four: To Enable or Disable Thumbnail Previews in Group Policy
Option Five: To Enable or Disable Thumbnail Previews using a REG file

Thanks, but none worked. Tried all of them.
I think it must be something do to with the icon class itself that prevents it. Small thumbnails work for 16x16 pngs and such.
Just .ico's don't load their content when viewed with small icon or detail view. I rather not want to reinstall windows again just to find that problem happening again.


Did no one ever experienced this bug / glitch ever before?

I have the same problem. I tried all the options. This problem may be caused by another application. I am not sure.

The other day I installed "Nero AI Photo Tagger" but when it didn't work I uninstalled it (with wastes). And then this problem arose.

My solutuion:

Download and install "Default Programs Editor"

Open software and select: File Type Settings > Icon

Type any image extension name in the search box (like bmp, jpg, png, ico, etc.)

Select > Use the file's own path for the icon

Check this box: Infer resource path from icon preview

Select from the bottom "Save to Registry"

Thats it.
