I assume the Windows search this PC feature that is in the upper right of all the windows is currently broken in Windows 2004?

Hi, do you mean the search box top right of file explorer and many open/save dialogues?

MS 'broke' this with changes in the early release of 1909, then more or less fixed it- it should be working in 2004, except that valid search syntax is no longer highlighted helpfully in blue, as I understand it.

Put another way, is something not working for you? If so, please give details with appropriate screenshots thus:

    Thanks.

Thank you so much for your reply.

I can type in mine. I'm sorry you can't in yours. This was a problem people reported as MS began to make changes in build 1909, but is supposed to be fixed in build 2004.

History: (so often omitted by posters)
    - When did this start?
    - Could you use the search box in build 1909, assuming you upgraded to 2004 from that?
    - Was this a problem immediately after you upgraded to build 2004?

    Diagnostic steps:
Create a new user for test purposes.
Log in as that user. Do you then see the same problem?

Boot to Safe Mode. Do you then see the same problem?

Just to check which build you have, please post a screenshot of the result of
    Win key + r, winver

What happens when you run the Search and Idexing troubleshooter?Troubleshoot Problems in Windows 10 with Troubleshooters
    - post a screenshot.

yes it worked in 1909 and yes it apparently works in safe mode which means its something i'm doing i guess
and the troubleshooter does not detect any problem

since you asked for itWindows search broken-clipboard02.png

This is known as the File Explorer Search Box. and as @dalchina has mentioned this was an issue that many suffered immediately after 1909 was released in Nov. of 2019.

Windows 10 1909 KB4517245 Update Causes File Explorer Issues

Back then one of the quick fixes was to stop and restart the Explorer.exe process which will refresh your desktop.

Restart explorer.exe Process in Windows 10

Eventually in March of 2020 there was an update to 1909 that fixed the issue for me and others, along with these Runtime Broker crashes appearing at the same time in 'Reliability History' found at:

Control Panel > Security and Maintenance > Maintenance > View reliability history

Search boxes inside windows not working

Worth noting, while I'm not seeing these File Explorer Search window 'freezes' like I did back then, I AM now religeiously seeing these 'Runtime Broker' crashes again immediately after a search. So something that was fixed back then may have gotten broken again by 2004.

    Actually

I decided to roll back for now... it's a bit buggy still... I know Microsoft will force the update upon us at some point don't know when but I know they will... but until then they can work the issues out

Well I assumed they wouldn't release it to the public being buggy for the most part. I mean isn't that what their fast ring and beta testers are for.

There's the intention, then there's the plan, then there's the harsh reality. I perceive you may be an idealist.

Quite recent history, if you care to research it, shows significant issues commonly reported after the releases of 1809, 1909 for example. Apart from the bugs MS introduce with changes, even with a large pool of testers, a release cannot be fully tested in every respect with all possible combinations of hardware and software.

I don't wish to excuse MS- some bugs really should not have escaped.
