PC Freezes randomly and completely (Version 1903, OS Build 18362.836)

Hey,

I've had this problem for about a week where my PC freezes completely, without any warning stuttering or anything. If I have a buffered video playing the sound may continue for a while, but mouse doesn't move and PC doesn't respond to anything. I've tried to wait a minute or two, but it doesn't seem to have a difference. So far I haven't been able to catch anything in the event viewer since the PC freezes so fast that it doesn't seem to have a chance to write anything up. I tried /sfc scannow but it didn't find any errors. Also tried updating drivers and Windows 10.

So far it seems to happen when I have blender and/or photoshop running. Haven't had a freeze when gaming or just browsing the internet. Since I have no error to work with it's really hard to google some solutions so I'm at a loss.

Any suggestions?

Hi this seems to be from around 2017, so not so old.

I've had this problem for about a week

History: (so often omitted by posters)
- Please check your Update History- was any update or (at the bottom) driver update applied around then?
- Did you install or update any programs? (Control Panel, Programs and Features lists dates)
- or uninstall any?
- Did you make any hardware changes?
- Was there any attributable event- power outage, cat walked over keyboard....?

As you say, freezes don't leave tracks in terms of logs or error messages.

Look first to hardware. Run the following checks:
Disks: On each run HDTune (free) v2.55 from e.g. Softpedia: Health and Error scan tabs.
RAM: Perform checks:
MemTest86+ - Test RAM
Run Windows Memory Diagnostics Tool in Windows 10

Pick some stress tests:
Huge List of Computer Stress Test Software [Used by Engineers in the Rugged Computing Industry]

Try
Enable and Disable Driver Verifier in Windows 10

Bear in mind some find this problem could be PSU related.

Software: try a clean boot (Google if unsure how or see tutorial).
Run for long enough in a manner that indicates whether yor PC freezes or not.

- probably RAM intensive? Are these fully compatible with Win 10?

Whilst you could use MS's Process Monitor (Procmon) to capture a log of all activity - which would presumably cease at the point of freezing- unless the freezing was consistent with some particular action, I doubt you'd learn anything. And even it there was any consistency, making a deduction from that could be next to impossible.

Once you've done the disk check, try disconnecting any disk you don't need to have present in a typical freezing scenario and see if there's a freeze.

If disk checks all pass, also try
Hard Disk Sentinel (trial) (SSDs too) and check the tab for each disk. That's the most informative program I know of.

That's good, but leaves a potential problem pending with any next update - which is cumulative, so would encompass this one.

You can of course block (hide) that particular update - tutorial available or free 3rd party tool.

If you can find any correlation between freezes and one particular program that would be great, then check compatibility/version of that program and any reports of similar issues.

Otherwise hide the update for now, and be prepared to cope with the same on any next update.

If you can run without freezes for 'long enough' that helps to give confidence it's not hardware-related.
