Explorer Seeking Forever / Thumbnails not showing

    Hi there,

At first i had a thumbnail issue where explorer would keep running the green bar and it would be slow, and wouldn't be able to pull up thumbnails. So i did sfc scan, cleared thumbnail cache, did DISM, checked for malware. All no problem. After clearing the thumbnail cache, the thumbnails show up as a white page now, and it loads like the picture below forever. Its quite odd though, because shortly after i noticed i had a windows update, so i did the update, and everything was back to normal. Then the next day, i have the same issue... (btw, im on an m.2 nvme ssd). Also if i go to start menu and go into Settings, i get the blue gear icon for settings and it doesnt open..

I tried setting up a seperate user profile, and it seems to work just fine under that profile.

    PC:
    Gigabyte Aorus Elite X570
    Gigabyte 2070 Super
    32 GB Trident Z Neo 3600mhz
    1tb Corsair MP600

    Windows 10 Version: 1909

Hi, it may not be possible to fix your user profile.

    Try these diagnostic steps:

Please try a clean boot with the problem user (Google or see tutorial if unsure how).
Report whether you see the same problem.

If you do, also disable all non-MS shell extensions using Shellexview (free). No need to log off or restart.
Report whether you see the same problem.

If you do, boot to Safe Mode, log in as that user, and again, report whether you see the same problem.

Did a clean boot, it is better, but i can tell the issue still remains. Explorer can load thumbnails now but its still slow.

Tried disabling non-MS shell extensions right after the clean boot, and same, still loads slow, but not as bad as before.

In safe mode though, it works as it should and is normal. Is the best solution just to do a clean install? What could have caused this?

Unknown. Windows is open to all manner of things writing to all manner of places.
Another possibility is disk error of course.

    Have you checked your disk?
HD Tune v2.55 free Health and Error scan tabs
    If ok,
    chkdsk c: /scan
    from an admin command prompt

That you have a user profile that works and one that doesn't indicates it's a setting or 3rd party effect or corruption in the user profile. Rather than bothering to clean install, one option would be to delete the problem user account.

However, you can try something else.
Download, install and run Autoruns (free from MS).

Compare the startups and shell extensions listed for the two user accounts. (You can take screenshots of one to compare with the other). Note any extra ones in the problems account. Log in to the problem account and disable the extra ones in Autoruns. See if you've fixed the problem.

Autoruns may well show more shell extensions. It shows everything starting from drivers upwards, so be careful and don't disable MS items.

No issues health or error wise with HD tune. Did a CHKDSK yesterday and no issues. I uninstalled some items that i thought could be potential issues, dropbox, WD smart program etc. Seems like its back to normal.. i'll see if it stays that way, since the issue did come back today. Thanks for your help!

Unfortunately the problem came back.. i'll have to look at recreating a new userprofile and seeing if that fixes my issue. This is so strange..

Have you tried the more methodical approach I suggested using Autoruns?
You're looking for differences between the accounts.

Umm... that's a good clue.. one of your programs..

Here's how I approach installing Windows and thereafter:

    a. Install Windows
    b. As soon as I can create a base (initial) disk image
    c. Make changes/install programs/keep notes
    d. Create a differential image and note that
    e. Repeat (c), (d) until a feature update
    then start again from (a)

That way if something goes wrong (and I notice it!) I can always go back one or more steps without a clean install and repeat.

I just contacted microsoft, we did an install of an older windows 10 version, and after just installing my drivers, i’m having the same issues. Could this be hardware issue now? This is happening on both my ssd which windows is installed on, and my HDD

    Something to try.

If you have mixed content folders containing several file types in particular image, video and maybe documents try disabling Automatic Folder Type Discovery:

Change Folder Template in Windows 10

    Use:
    All_Folders_Use_General_Items_Folder_Template.bat

Then make all Libraries general template:
Change Folder Template in Windows 10

Grab Processhacker - installed or portable.

    Downloads - Process Hacker

    Grab this software:

Thumbnail Database Cleaner - IT Samples

Run ProcessHacker as admin via right click menu:

Explorer Seeking Forever / Thumbnails not showing-process-hacker.jpg

Run Thumbnail Database Cleaner at the same time.

Kill Explorer via process hacker right click menu.
Clean thumbnails via the other program.
Restart computer via Hacker drop down menu.

Explorer Seeking Forever / Thumbnails not showing-process-hacker-restart.jpg

If you still have the issue after that let us know.
