    Sun/heat vs. laptop

    Win10 Pro
    10.0.19041

Staying home, I'm periodically frequenting our front deck with a laptop. Yesterday, sun and little cloud cover, I left the deck after ~2 hours. Me *and the laptop were getting too hot for comfort.

I'm concerned that the machine's innards might be more susceptible to the heat than I am. Would it be ok to place a reusable ice pad on my lap under the machine?

Although it ..would keep us both cooler, I'm not positive the machine would be okay with the cold bottom?

The laptop should be protected against overheating. First step, if the fans were not providing enough cooling, would be to throttle back the CPU to reduce the load, in extreme it should shut down if that wasn't enough. You can monitor the CPU temperature with something like Core Temp

I'd be concerned about condensation on the ice-pack getting into the laptop, water and electrics don't mix. Oh. and concerned for you getting sunburn.

The problem with cold and warm is hot air rises but cold air falls, The cold container would help if actually touching the case [transference] but I'd prefer one of those things that act as a lap board that has fans in it and use a USB port for power.

Excellent points all (including sun burn <g>)!

I downloaded Core Temp last evening but wasn't sure that monitoring the core temperatures was a sufficient barometer for other parts also. I guess it is.

I will slow down the CPU for outside. In fact, I'll just change the 'on battery' performance from my changed, higher performance settings to the Lenovo default.

I never thought of condensation but that's not something I care to risk. Great point.

Thinking this over, I'll spend 1/2 the time on the deck at one time going back out later if...

I'll leave the ice pack in the freezer.

And, yes, sun screen and UV wide brimmed hat.

Btw, I found a tip for viewing the screen outside that works.

Ease of use, Magnify, Invert, reduce to 100%. The difference between the screen being usable and not outside.

    @markg2 -

How about a simple umbrella which will diffuse the sunlight?
They do make portable laptop coolers which have extra fans but I don't recommend them.

Work in the shade with cooler air temps and humidity, else move inside.

I gave up my search for that simple umbrella.

We live @ 8,100', CO mountains. Periodic wind is normal. Absent vents, a sun shade/umbrella history. Small shades/umbrellas rarely have vents.

The outside chairs/chaises are wood. 90% clip-ons made for tubular aluminum. We have large, vented, deck umbrellas that sit in steel bases under tables but they rely upon the table through which the pole comes up for wind stability.

Although the small clip-on shades generally have a goose neck, either it's not long enough, the mouth of the clip/clamp not wide enough and/or the shade diameter isn't enough for effectiveness.

You find one, don't keep it a secret!

Outside shaded area is next--likely move between the two. I gotta tell you, I really do like the safer at home deal. Life slows down, neighborhood walks and hikes instead of the gym. Interesting how much greater appreciation of the outdoor environment when sitting in or walking through. And with few to no people does have its strong points <g>
