Can Win Explorer show: A) folders alpha order B) Files by date order?

    Hello

How can I set up my Windows Explorer view such that in the right hand pane:

    A) At the top of the pane, I see the list of folders in alphabetic order

    B) Then I see my files sorted by date last edited order

    With thanks

    Use the Date column.

(P.S. thread bumping and 'useless one liners' (I quote) are against forum rules).

NO. This 100% fails to not solve my problem.

    1. It fails to put the directories into alphabetic older. [This is deeply irritating if you have lots of folders visible]

    2. I understand that "Date" refers to the date that the files were created. But that is NOT what I want. I want to see the files listed in the order in which I last accessed or last modified them.

    Any suggestions?

Right click the fields bar in explorer (Name, Date Modified, Type, Size, etc.). Then click on More..... There you will get a list of data fields you can add and sort on. One of them is Date Accessed.

To get clear, this is what I am trying to achieve:

    1. The folders to appear first (because one is often wanting to navigate by changing directory)

    2. The folders should be in alphabetical order (because nothing else makes any sense)

    3. I then want to see the files sorted by the date of when I last saved them (or last modified them)(or even last accessed them) because if I have been editing a file recently, the chances are that it will be the files that I am most likely to edit again!

Isn't this what Windows Explorer used to do by default??

PS If Windows Explorer cant be made to do this, are there any alternative (freemium/freeware) applications that will let us do this?

The left (folder) pane sorts by name (I don't think it can be changed), so you could just set the RH pane to sort by date and see what you want. It seems that if you set the date sort to ascending (earliest first) you get the folders first:
Can Win Explorer show: A) folders alpha order B) Files by date order?-sort-date-ascending.png
and if you sort newest first you get files, then folders: Can Win Explorer show: A) folders alpha order B) Files by date order?-sort-date-descending.png
so you can see your folders alpabetically on the left, and files (most recent first) on the right, with the folder list you don't want out of site at the bottom. Note that the latter seems to be the case even when a folder has a more recent modified date. I have never noticed this behaviour, so it may not be consistent.

Not what you were asking for, but I don't think that is possible. Martin

The left panel lists the folders, the right panel has some choices simply by clicking the column heading such as Name, Date, Size, Type to re-arrange ascending or descending and by right-clicking one of the headings can have others added.

Experiment, just keep right-clicking a title until getting what is desired. But I have never seen where File Explorer [and the older Windows Explorer] could sort folders separately from files, i.e. folders alphabetically and files opposite, that is if I understand the question correctly.

Get Total Commander or some other clone.
