    Win10 copying

when I went to bed, the copy was 0%. When I got up, it was not there. The browser windows were also not there. I tried to look thru "computer management" > task viewer, but could not see anything related to copying. I am running Win10 ver 1909.

The copy was/is a c:\Users directory, which seemed to take up most of the partition. I had used the info from this forum to get an original image mounted as a virtual image thru disk management.

I looked at the destination (c:), but it was not clear that the copy had completed. I have tried this multiple times and the copy simply copied the files to the destination, overwriting them.

The copy files were too big. The c: partition is ~500 GB in used space. The original virtual partition is ~450 GB in size. I discovered that the \Users directory was ~250 GB in size.

Use built in robocpy to copy the files as that gives a report at the end and its a lot faster just use the mirror option ie robocopy c:\users\fred d:\users\fred /mirror if its a long path put it in qoutes or use the free gui Add a Graphical User Interface (GUI) to the Microsoft Robocopy Command Line Tool

I am waiting on Robocopy to finish. I will report back when it is done.

I have restarted the robocopy because the /mir option was creating some strange effects for me. It wiped out the documents, desktop, and pictures I had copied from /somemountpoint/Users/mazarick/documents to ~documents/desktop/pictures (the robocopy had the same destination). It had also destroyed my icons in the toolbar and made Windows Powershell not show up. Fortunately, I had a generic version downloaded called "Powershell" which I reused. The robocopy was doing this multiple times when I killed it and it's doing it again.

"2020/05/27 23:09:02 ERROR 1920 (0x00000780) Copying File c:\acer\users\mazarick\AppData\Local\Microsoft\WindowsApps\GameBarElevatedFT_Alias.exe The file cannot be accessed by the system.
    Waiting 30 seconds..."

When I try to access the path, I get an error message

Since this (and others) are a 0 length file. I thought it appropriate to furnish this info as well:

When I try to access "disk management", I get the following error (again):
    Win10 copying-mikemazarickdiskmanageerrormessage.jpg

I have Disk Management running, but there is only the possibility of attached a VHC (not detaching one). I am scared/afraid to do anything except reboot (such as detaching the volume and re-attaching it), because I haven't tried it. I have already messed up one VHD on one disk...

I wanted to give you a brief overview of what I've been thru and why all this copying is necessary. Basically, I want to use a replacement hard disk for the original one. I had made two backup copies (and now there is one). My strategy is to rename the user from mazar to mazarick using the same UID number as mazarick had originally. Why don't I simply mount the c: partition as a copy? Basically, I don't know how to do it and I am "almost there" (but not quite). This is a continuation of this thread:

The Filipino girl who was to help me wanted me to abandon the emails along with the documents, Desktop, and Pictures I had saved. If this was 1-3 months worth, it would have been easy but this is 15 years worth... not so easy.

So /mir is what I eventually want to do, but how to get there since the only login account is mazar with a different UID number. My next strategy is to put everything back for mazar like it originally was.

Everything is working except Windows Powershell. I get the following error message when trying to access it:

The File Manager result are included here:

meanwhile ("back at the ranch"), the generic Powershell (running as administrator) continues. It gives this error message:
"2020/05/28 10:50:18 ERROR 1920 (0x00000780) Copying File c:\acer\users\mazarick\AppData\Local\Microsoft\WindowsApps\GameBarElevatedFT_Alias.exe The file cannot be accessed by the system.

"Some type of background info would be very nice. For instance, there is someplace where UID numbers are stored. There is also a place where access formats are stored (the equivalent of /etc/passwd in linux). What I am looking for is a short tutorial on the overall log in process for Win10."

It occurred to me to search for tutorials myself. I ran into your excellent tutorials (on many subjects pertaining to Win10) and I have just started reading them. The agony I have been going thru will be simplified a lot by reading the tutorials (and maybe a good piece of "cloning" software).

With the errors your getting you need to run a full disk check and check for bad sectors as that may cause it

Thank you!! I am so lame, I need instructions on doing a full disk check for bad sectors.

    - - - Updated - - -

There are two disks: my primary "new to me" disk and the older backup disk that I am using for the image. It is a primary reason to NOT use this disk as an image source - it is just too flakey. There is a reason it was cut off.

A "google" search turned up the following: Using PowerShell (logged in as administrator) run the following commands:
    $ sfc /scannow
    $ chkdsk C: /f /r (fix and recover)

I will use the chkdsk on drive f: (my flakey usb connected drive.

    - - - Updated - - -

The results of the sfc /scannow command:

Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations.

    - - - Updated - - -

It looks like we found something with chkdsk. The message I'm getting is:
"Stage 4: Looking for bad clusters in user file data ... Progress: 32 of 281840 done; Stage: 0%; Total: 0%; ETA: 7:09:17"
    It just hangs.

If it finds a bad block it will test it like a 100 times before writing it as bad so this can take a very long time if its a big disk let it run

(in spite of my previous report) It would be a really great tutorial to know where all the component of a typical user's desktop is. For example, when you "right click" on the start button, you get a menu that has links. These are generally in \Users\someuser\AppData\local\low\Microsoft\Windows\WinX\Group[1,2,3]\someshortcut. This would save someone quite a bit of time.

The reason for investigating UID numbers is because:
(I can't find the picture, but it clearly said if you use the same name you may have a different number associated with this name. It was an warning message in Win10). I believe this forum is the best hope for this because of your detailed knowledge of Win10, especially the SID number. You don't have to include the components for everything, but the major components (such as the location of Desktop, documents, download, pictures, the "start" button, etc.) would give us a good start.

Is there a reason why you use robocopy in preference to Macrium?
