I tried to get RegCool to work, but I couldn't get it to use Registry entries from the same computer. I will use Regedit because it is the program that Diane Poremsky uses and if I venture too far afield, I will lose her before I found her.

The backup feature of RegCool is really great. I will use this when things start to "heat up".

I believe if Diane was going to show up, she would have already showed up. It is up to us to figure out what files/objects it takes to get something besides HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE to show up. This is quite an old posting for her and I'm sure that the past 8 years have been productive.

What we have to figure out: Is it possible to have access to the Office Apps (primarily Outlook) thru a non original SID or do I have to migrate SIDs as well as accounts to be able to access the original Office documents? Can I get "part way there" and how much will it cost me? I am a cheap *******, but I realize that if you want to achieve something, you have to be willing to pay something, even if you end up doing most of the work.

    Summarizing my efforts to date:
    A. Using File Manager to copy the files. Downside: 1) I seemed to get stuck on java.exe whenever the files were near completion 2) Each "copy" seemed to take up more space. I started out with 10-15 GB, it is up to 1 TB now. The original "image" was ~450 GB. It would be great to type Copy /EXCLUDE java.exe.
    B. Using Robocopy in the Powershell to copy files. We already figure out that Robocopy /MIR causes more harm than good, and we tried using it without /MIR, but it got caught up in the same place Robocopy /MIR did - it couldn't make a new file from the original one if the original one did not "belong" to the new group. I also noticed that "user"\AppData was copied as "user"\AppData\AppData\AppData\AppData\AppData\AppData\AppData... (you get the drift). It doesn't have to be "user"\AppData. It is really strange fore me to be without the standard tools that I had cobbled together over the past 10 years. An example is "du" and "df". I would like to point to what else beside "user"/AppData has a problem, but I don't want to "invent" a solution. There are certain things an OS has to provide. ROBOCOPY seems to "almost work". I need for it to fully work.

See that last two posts in this thread for a possible explanation and maybe a solution.

Something seems wrong in my file structure

Fortunately, the original "mazarick" SID is located in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE. Using the same steps as I had previously used (and looking at the original registry):

This compares to (when SOFTWARE is selected from my new PC). Makes sense, because I am logged in as mazar.

I am running (thru File Manager) a search for *.DAT files in the original partition (now drive G:). I will shut this down so that I can try some addition things unrelated to restoring my files (which I want to do, but there are other things happening). The search took a very long time and has a lot of results which I have to go thru.

File search is problematic I think. See results here:

SwiftSearch 1418 files in 0.13 seconds

    Win10 copying-swiftsearch.jpg

    QuickSearch 1401 files

    Win10 copying-quick-search.jpg

    NTFSsearch 1351 files

    Win10 copying-ntfs-search.jpg

    All show different results.

    If interested:

    Download SwiftSearch - MajorGeeks

Needs admin rights (right click run as admin or use Elevated Shortcut)

I searched for *.DAT files because I wanted to find out what Diane Poremski knew (a long time ago)... I wanted to find out if there were other candidates for opening other sources the same as HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE. So far, I haven't found any. If the results were the same on mazarick-oldPC as they are using the CURRENT USER, then we would be done. This is an attempt to find the SID for mazarick (I think I've located it, but I'm not sure). I also wanted to find out if the results were not as populated as I think. We can do this if we knew the SID for mazarick 100% (or as close to 100% as practical).

I will take the link you had provided and try to make things better. The results consisted of a lot of Windows.old entries and near 0 byte files (the NTUSER.DAT had 14 MB). I agree that some type of file manager result is bad and a swiftsearch is better.

This goes back to the original problem I had, which is, if either one of the system image restores would have worked properly, we wouldn't have been here now. This was an attempt to restore the April 25 image. I am working on March 27 now because the April 25 image is gone.

I wouldn't worry about it if it boots okay after a restart.

Most of us here do not rely on Windows Image backup and tend to use Macrium Reflect instead.
Personally I switched to Minitools Shadowmaker.

It does not boot after this message into Win10 Home (my original image). I will go down the path of doing exactly what it says, starting with "for more information about this issue and a possible fix, go to https://windows.com/stopcodes". When I get there, it says "Troubleshooting Blue Screen Errors"

I wanted to give pictures of this file. Unfortunately, I have a "size restriction" the only allows me to upload 5 files.

So you tried to restore a Windows Image Backup? I've never used it.

If anyone else can help please post.

I tried "safe mode" (it was disabled before). It wasn't until I figured out on page 6 a way out of safe mode. That means I have to be really careful. You can't use the internet while in Safe Mode.

I wanted to provide what my son wrote me about 10 days ago. If only it were this easy...

    From: Mickey Mazarick

Subject: Re: I have the wrong approach to the problem...

To begin with I would install windows on a separate drive.. If you have a solid state drive, that should be your OS drive.
After that , all your stuff from my documents desktop etc is in the Users folder. Just add your new user to that folder with "full control". It will spider all subfolders after you hit apply on the top level folder so you are set after that. So if your extra drive is e: find *E:\Users* and right click on that.

Use real copies of windows too and let it do a full update before doing
    this.
