File Explorer : Left hand column anomaly, drv letter, not name

    W10 Pro x64 - Ver 1909 (OS Build 18363.836)

All of my main navigation pane folders which can be moved from their default location, have been. Music and Videos kept on separate drives.

Yet the left hand pane in File Explorer shows the VIDEO drive by its drive letter, rather than its name AND what is presented as an ordinary drive, with a std folder icon, "videos"

Sure its a cosmetic problem, regardless....

I assume this is held in the registry somewhere? But where ?

See attached. Weirdly, I had a similar problem on the PC i used before this, after the same location changes, only in this case, TWO "iconed" VIDEOS folders were presented.

    Thanks in advance.,

The list doesn't seem to be unusual for the number of drives [or partitions] except there is an F: drive and and the Videos [precise name] drive also has the letter F:. Is it possible the upper F: with no Label is a shortcut?

    Backup your person data

Then empty your user folders (DON'T DELETE THEM)

You need to reset your user folders back to the default location and start gain, moving the location of your user folders properly (not just copy/move > paste), if you want to.

Move Location of Favorites Folder in Windows 10

I haven't seen that suggested before. What is the reason for this suggestion?

Can you post a screenshot of This PC grouped by type?

I can understand that a drive designated as your Videos folder would appear twice: once as your Videos folder & once as a drve, but you seem to have a 3rd entry as well.

No. Both the same folder. Indeed, have just gone to look at our PC downstairs., which has also had the main folders moved to another drive, also has two invocations of Videos. None of the other folders behave this way.

I moved them using the approved method. However, these folders were already on other drives, so in effect nothing was moved, they were empty as Windows created them on the OS drive, and the original location of these folders in effect restored. BTW, these drives are 4Tb and 3Tb respectively, so the notion of restoring them to their default locations is not going to happen!

See above - another PC maintained the same way, has the same problem

Yes - because first are displayed the main folders as defined by Windows. Then you get all the main drives as well, for whatever reason. So it repeats the main folder entry twice - see attached. File Explorer : Left hand column anomaly, drv letter, not name-capture.png

Like I said, I expect one folder & one drive, but there's an item in the Navigation Pane list that doesn't appear in the right-hand pane. The one that has the Videos icon & is labeled "F:\" (between Downloads & MeadiaServerJP)

Correct. WHY is what I want to know, and more to the point, how do I get rid of it! I do have a spare 4Tb drive with some poor sectors, which I could use to transfer my videos to manually, then try defaulting back to my user space, and then moving out again. As noted, this has happened on 2 PCs!

    Thanks

So, all three display the same content? Just different path in Address bar? If so, try the following two commands in the Address bar and see if the displayed paths differ:

    Code:
    shell:my video

    shell:local videos
    Open regedit, navigate to:
    Code:
    HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\User Shell Folders
Capture a screenshot and post in reply,

I suggest checking what path is recorded for your videos user folder in the Registry

    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\User Shell Folders
and, even though it should not be any different,
    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Shell Folders

In both places you are looking for the entry My video so you can see what path is stored for it but, while you are there, check for anything else that refers to the same path.

The reason that I am suggesting this is that the Videos folder, in the upper-right part of your last diagram, has a general folder icon not a Videos icon so I think that a fault in user folder designations might be involved in the problem. I do appreciate that the chances are low because the same condition exists on two computers.

I must have been typing very slowly. I can see that part of my post duplicates part of Keith's.
