Graphics - Screen Freezing - Stumped

    W/10 ver 1909 build 18363.836
Install was from a w/7 upgrade but I opted to not keep any files.
Vishera 8 core H60 water cooled.
    Msi Am3+ 990fxa 18 gigs crucial 1866
Current gpu Radeon MSI Armor 8 gig rx 580 - former gpu rx 570 4 gig
    Main drive Adata su650
    Data / games drive W/D 1t.

Whats happening; Screen locks up tight when into games such as Anno 1800 - Wows. Cannot get to taskman only way out is hard reset. Graphics setting are typically high but not ultra. Tried disabling all advanced Radeon settings and no anti-aliasing problem persists.
Upgraded gpu, reinstalled drivers, problem persists.
All motherboard drivers are up to date.
Tried standard windows memory test no issues. chkdsk /f no errors.
Prime95 cpu stress test no errors.
Passmark memtest86 9hr stress test max contigous errors: 0.
msinfo32 - find problem devices bat test result: No Problem devices found.

I've ruled out the gpu, btw gpu-z stats show a mild to medium use indicating not an overheat issue. Core temp monitor also shows similar stats. Although Freq on core 0 (1) normally shows 4699.04 (199.96 x 23.5) sometimes drops to about 1/2 that for split second. But that is a rarity and has occurred without heavy gaming and there where no lock ups. I'm not over clocking.
Ok so it's not a new screaming Ryzen build but I'm not ready to give up on it. I just can't find the problem. I even tried putting the GPU in the 2nd pcie x16 slot, problem persists.
Perhaps a communication - hardware failure on the motherboard? I could live with replacing that but AM3+ mb's that support 220watt cpu's are not exactly easy to find anymore. Another option I've considered is an pcie adaptor card & a nvme ssd and reinstall windows, but will a clean install take my old 7 key. Then again if it's a hardware / mb issue I could run into the same issue, safer bet would be just use the existing ssd, ... or I could just start drinking more.
Any thoughts or advice would be appriciated.

Once you upgraded from Win7 your motherboard then becomes an automatic activation just like myne were so you won't have to type any serial key in again.

I had a 220W FX CPU & they give out some serious amounts of heat & not sure if 1 core W/C fan radiator is big enough to cool them properly, I used a big air cooler ...

I would use Cystal Disk (download from Microsoft Store App) test your SSD to see what its performance is like & you could use a m.2 on the pci_ex slots as your o.S. then keep all gaming data on the ssd to improve performance quite alot, as a separate drive for o.s. is preferred for gaming to reduce lag, stuttering ect.

Or just buy a second SSD for the O.S to run from on the sata ports ?

Or you may not not need to spend a fortune buying a m.2 due to not getting much more than sata speed from a FX based system, just get a pci_ex ssd mounted card or even better use a mSata pci_ex card on the lane side, I used mSata on the pci_ex & the speed gain & response was considerably better.

After thinking about it a bit more if you are using freesync with this FX chip then I guess that is your problem as FX is only good for 40 FPS tops in most games.

When I had my FX system I used a GTX1050Ti but only in Half Sync as it does not perform well, I even tried with freesync & all I got is stutter from that !

So you could add an SSD for performance then use a card which has half sync capabilities or upgrade to Ryzen ?

Could you please re-list all your system specs with make/model of each peace. 8 core vishera tells me nothing as there a few versions of that CPU. Make sure to include your PSU.

    I may have found the problem;
Event Viewer - Windows Logs - System - several Critical Events of Kernel Power.
This most often points to the PSU. Well it could be the connection to the MB.

PSU is only a few months old, picked it up at best buy, their site says the same psu isn't available within 250 miles. Just my luck. I'll figure out something and report back later.

Wow...that's a beast of a CPU! Did that particular model come with the liquid cooler? What type of CPU are you using.

Newegg has that exact same model for $71. Personally I would look for something better.....like the Seasonic Focus PX-750, 80+ Platnium and a 10 yr warranty.

I have a question about the cooling of your motherboard VRMS, are they getting proper cooling as MSI boards are not the most stable without cooling them properly ?

    Also:

How big is your Radiator in cores & fans & temps ?

    &

While your ordering parts you should get a second ssd (perhaps identical to the one you have for a matched pair ?) for the O.S to run from so this will speed up your gaming data transfer from the game data drive as no O.S in the way slowing it all down.

Yup & thanks, one reason I'd like to get some more mileage out of this rig. Picked up the H60 just after new years.
I bought an Antec 850 Gold 80+ HCG high current gamer PSU. I know it's maybe overkill but the price was reasonable & there seems to be an interesting shortage of PSU's these days. Fingers crossed the jury is out for a week or so hope this solves the issue.

Plenty of airflow, extra 120 on the side, positive ventilation. Radiator is what came with the H60, fan being behind it drawing air out. Already have 3 ssd's considering a pcie nvme adapter for the OS. Actually 2 for W10, the other is a dedicated Linux drive.

Does the 990FXA support booting from NVME? The chipset is capable of it, but the MSI BIOS would have to include support.

Yes it would, in fact the msi 970 series could as well.

Well, unfortunately the problem persists. Complete bummer.
Looked into replacement boards for this cpu keep in mind they need to support 220w, found 3, all used, none under 160$. How about that noise.
I've therefor decided to do a "stimulus build" on an AM4 platform.
I would like to thank those who participated, marking this thread as solved and done.

Well at least you have a psu, ssd's & a case for your AM4 build, it is just too late to get new boards for the AM3 which power the 220w cpu's.

I had a Gigabyte 990FXA Gaming AM3 motherboard which could even overclock the 220w CPU'S as it had strong VRM'S & it has on-board m.2 & I even tried to use a m.2 samsung on this setup while using a fx8350 & it was just the same speed as sata in the end & for some reason it only gave me 3 years of gaming but it only cost £135 new, second hand board could not be trusted to last too long & even a well known shop in the UK does not buy them second hand either!

With AM4 & a Gen 3 Ryzen think about a PCi 4.0 board like myne for that 4,800mb/s read speed / 4,200mb/s write speed & an install time of 7 mins from a USB stick (from power up to desktop load time)
