I have had this same problem on several machines with Windows 10 back thru 7. It seems to be a Windows bug, in my opinion. And no, my arrangement settings aren't wrong.
My icons still rearrange to the left if I switch between user accounts on my two PCs. The icons are fine if I log off each account before logging in to the next one. This is a bug in Windows and another example of poor MS software engineering. They also show no interest in fixing the bug since it has now been present for a long time.

    Hey guys,

I've ran into the same issue and decided to write a very lightweight application that remembers the state before the resolution changes and after the resolution has changed, it's going to put the icons back in place where they belong. No more clicking and other stuff, install once, be done forever.

    Check it out here:
https://github.com/TomONeill/persistentdesktopicons (if you're a developer, please create an issue on GitHub)

    Edit:
I didn't properly test it before going public, stupid me. I've noticed there's a lot more to it than my original idea of how it all works. Currently I have an idea of how the application should work and in the upcoming weeks I'm going to try and finish the job. The problem is that the positions of the desktop icons are different for every resolution. This means I've got to save the icon positions AND the resolution and compare the resolution you're going to change to.

I've uploaded a little side-release which is capable of keeping one resolution's state only and automatically restores the icons when changing resolution. So this will work if you have to turn down your resolution to play a game to come back to your initial resolution (or when turning the monitor off/on).

    Hello,

My desktop icons keep rearranging and windows explorer won't save the position I put them in.

I can rearrange them but when I click 'Refresh' or if I restart explorer or if I reboot they rearrange to another setup. This happens in both normal mode and safe mode.

I have tried all the solutions available on the internet with no luck, including the obvious ones (trying all the auto-arrange and grid options) and even some more complex ones (sfc, registry tweaks).

    Any suggestions will be appreciated.

    Thank you
I had the same problem so I installed DesktopOK_x64.exe from this site Download.

The technique I used didn't give me a lasting solution.

After too much grief and seeing what others had gone through, I opted for a work-around. There's a program called Fences from Stardock which is used to organize desktop icons. Putting the icons inside the blocks has kept things in order. I've switched back and forth with my KVM switch and not gotten into trouble so far. While I'd prefer to continue just clumping together icons to my suiting, there comes a time to look for a way out.

I has this problem until an hour ago. When I right click the desktop and selected Display Settings it would show that my main monitor was shared with another (1&2). I couldn't undo this. So, I hit the Fn key and the monitor switch key at the same time (F8 on my Dell) and the Windows 10 'Project' panel popped out on the right. It was on 'Extend', so I selected 'This PC Only' and that fixed my problem. I have no idea if this was just me or not. I have not used an extended desktop on another screen, so I dont know how this happened. Anyhow, I just wanted to pass this on in case it could help someone else.

I thought I had this problem solved. But when I started up with the monitor unplugged it happened again. Sixty icons of folders, programs and documents, all in a mess on the screen. That sought of thing makes you pretty angry 16 years ago with Windows XP this never happened. It looks like the computer industry is going backward.

I had this problem in XP--and, if memory serves, in Win 95 and win 98. Microsoft has had lots of time to realize the problem exists, but apparently has done nothing about it.
