I have 2 screens and win10 will scramble my icons if I turn any of them off and some times even when I don't turn 1 off.
microsoft does not care about your problem unless it makes them money. there are many other stupid things ms won't fix for the same reason. they won't delegate the resources to fix all those little bugs and incompatibilities, so why should we shoe them any loyalty.

    Hello,

My desktop icons keep rearranging and windows explorer won't save the position I put them in.

I can rearrange them but when I click 'Refresh' or if I restart explorer or if I reboot they rearrange to another setup. This happens in both normal mode and safe mode.

I have tried all the solutions available on the internet with no luck, including the obvious ones (trying all the auto-arrange and grid options) and even some more complex ones (sfc, registry tweaks).

    Any suggestions will be appreciated.

    Thank you

Please keep reporting this via feedback (e.g. Windows key + ?) and MS sites e.g. socialtechnet. It's not even a new problem in Win 10.

I bought my gf a laptop a month ago and she was having this exact issue. I found this one and it worked like a charm but I figured I would share it here to help everyone with this annoying issue. Hope it helps!
In regedit go to [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\PoliciesThen create Key "Explorer"
Add new DWORD value "NoSaveSettings" and set to 0
To be safe, I exported HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\ and called it noSaveSettingsRestore.reg
Now Reboot and the problem was solved for us.
Just tested and it made no difference. Seems that uncheck View|Align icons to grid" (right-click on the desktop) helps but icons are still moved at times. A good program to restore icons is "DesktopOK."
DesktopOK 4.35 Save and restore the desktop icon positions.

Download from upper right hand of the screen.
    Download DesktopOK 4.35

This issue happens also on a new Windows 10 machine just received. Seems that Microsoft has not prioritized this issue otherwise it would have been solved long ago.

I used the prog DesktopOK and i noticed it saves my desktop as 2048x1152 instead off 2560x1440 .
Is that normal or is it where my problems lay,
that W10 somehow uses that lower resolution when I come out of sleepmode/standby or when I alt tab from games and it rearranges my desktop icons...

I remember having had such issues a while ago.. solved after installing a current windows 10 compatible graphics driver for my gfx card.
That should be your first stop I guess.

I am having this issue as well. Every time I reboot the icons move over to the right side of my screen. Now, I am running multiple monitors - my laptop, a monitor plugged into the monitor port on the laptop and a monitor connected to USB via the DisplayLink driver. At one point a windows upgrade seemed to fix the problem, but over the last couple of months, it has resurfaced.

Along with this, and I don't know if it's related, every time I reboot, dialog boxes for each of my external drives open on the desktop. I have no idea why it does that.

If anyone has any thoughts, they would be appreciated. If not, hopefully the summer update, whenever that happens will solve these problems.

    Thanks.
