    Hello,

My desktop icons keep rearranging and windows explorer won't save the position I put them in.

I can rearrange them but when I click 'Refresh' or if I restart explorer or if I reboot they rearrange to another setup. This happens in both normal mode and safe mode.

I have tried all the solutions available on the internet with no luck, including the obvious ones (trying all the auto-arrange and grid options) and even some more complex ones (sfc, registry tweaks).

    Any suggestions will be appreciated.

    Thank you
I had the same problem with my icons rearranging on my desktop, and I use this fix. It works great. Video on youtube is called "Windows 10 Desktop Icons Rearranging FIX" the link is Windows 10 Desktop Icons Rearranging FIX - YouTube I hope this helps. All the best. Peppe

    Okay Guys,
This problem is making me mad, so mad.
I Just reinstalled Windows 10 from scratch, created 2 local user accounts, same problem.
It only happens when I change user, no problem after a restart + logon with the same user.
I use a EliteBook 840 G1, installed no drivers. So for me it's clearly a nasty bug in Windows 10.
Maybe hardware related. Gave feedback to Microsoft months ago.

this is not a problem inherent in windows 10, its been in since at least windows 7. They either can't fix it or are not interested in fixing it. None of the check-boxes work as they should.

It breaks, EVERY time the screen size/resolution changes, or you plug in extra monitor, or from some random windows update, they should just remove the auto arrange feature (as it stands now) and have a manual version to do a "one time" auto-arrange or grid snap if the user chooses to. ...And if icons are off the edge of screen, it can pull them on temporarily, but if you re-start or change resolutions it should remember the original position and put them back there once the screen res allows. The original position should only ever change if the user moves the icon manually, or manually clicks the grid/auto arrange button (at that time only)

I bought my gf a laptop a month ago and she was having this exact issue. I found this one and it worked like a charm but I figured I would share it here to help everyone with this annoying issue. Hope it helps!
In regedit go to [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\PoliciesThen create Key "Explorer"
Add new DWORD value "NoSaveSettings" and set to 0
To be safe, I exported HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\ and called it noSaveSettingsRestore.reg
Now Reboot and the problem was solved for us.

Iconoid works really well in my W10 64 bit. it's much tidier than windows attempts anyway. You can export the settings in case you think they might be lost. They do a 64 bit version too.

How to Create New Key in Policies Registry?

I have never done anything with/to my computer registry, so not sure how to create the new "Explorer" key you mention. I got all the way to the Policies key and there are 3 columns: Name; Type; and Data. In Name it shows ab (Default); in Type it shows REG_SZ; and in Data it shows (value not set). Once I get to Policies, how do I create the new Explorer key and what goes into the three columns? Does the stuff that is there stay there, or should it be removed? Sorry for my ignorance on working with the registry, but I don't want to mess anything up.

Well..... thx fer all suggestions. None have worked fer me. I dont have 3rd party virus protection, the registry keys are therefore not applicable to me cause they arent there. Tried the refresh trick.... nope. Would rather not have a 3rd party program fix this for me. In fact I would have thought it incumbent on the software manufacturer (win 10) to fix this problem. Surely it cant be that difficult !!! Any help would be greatly appreciated , because, while I wouldnt consider myself to be OCD or even a tad anal....... I JUST WANT MY ICONS TO STAY WHERE I PUT EM !!!!
Thats it.... help if u can, sit back and sip ure latte if ya cant

    Never Mind The Bollocks

Hi guys, i registered just to post my findings on this issue. The one thing i noticed is that i had changed my option for "Change the size of text, apps, and other items:" to be larger than normal cause i liked bigger icons, so i had it around 125% on my 1080p monitor. Then when i got my new 2560x1440p monitor i left the settings and then this issue started happening where my icons kept rearranging themselves after each shutdown or monitor sleeping/awaking. After trying different things over the week i remembered that option and changed the size down back to default 100% and then boom it never happened again, its been 2 days since i tried this and it hasn't happened since. Sorry for the long full story lol. Hopefully Microsoft fixes this dumb issue but at least this is a valid fix for now, just getting used to smaller icons/text

    Cheers,

    Tyrann

I was having this issue and it was driving me insane.
My icons would be small one moment, next time I turned the PC on they would have moved and be big, next time moved again and overlapping.

THEN...I went into personal settings by 'right click'
    'Personalise'
then at 'Choose a fit' for my desktop wallpaper, I changed it from 'centre' to 'fill'.
after this everything stayed where it was.
