    desktop.ini file causing issues.

I am having an issue with the desktop.ini file. I made a folder on a USB stick for use uploading a CSV to an instrument I am working on. When the instrument's OS looks for for the file, it expects a specific name and only the one CSV file to be present. The presence of the desktop.ini file causes an error message stating that there is not the correct number of files present. I understand that this file is basically in every folder, and until now, I have never had in issue with it.

My questions are, "What exactly are the actions that cause a new file to be generated after it is deleted?" and "Is there a way to prevent its generation, at least in one location so that I don't either have to always have the system files shown (as I've no need for them to be visible), so I don't have to delete it every time? The instrument in question uses Knoppix Linux.

You may use Task Scheduler to run a script that will delete unwanted files automatically.

A "normal" folder doesn't have a desktop.ini file. Barring manual creation, the files are created one of two ways:
    • by the OS for various system folders to specify a custom icon, LocalizedResourceName, or other cutomization.
    • When a user-created file folder is assigned a custom icon via the Customize tab of the folder's Properties dialog.

The fact that it seems to be recreated if deleted is behavior normally seen with a System folder like 3D Objects or Documents.

    Suggestions:
    • post the contents of the desktop.ini file. That will help us determine if it's normally associated with a System folder.
    • Post a screenshot of Regedit.exe open to this key:
    • Code:
      HKCU:\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\User Shell Folders
    • Tell us how the folder is being created or where it is being copied from.

    Good Morning...

Well, a day or so ago I found the reason for the appearance of the desktop.ini file. It was user induced with the culprit being me. The software I was using to connect to the data logger and and convert the proprietary file to a csv file included an icon file which I thought might be nice to use for the folder where the data file needed to be placed. That was great and all, except that I didn't even think about what the desktop.ini file is for. I reset the folder settings back to default and desktop.ini disappeared. I guess the moral is to leave some things alone.

Thank you everyone for your help, much appreciated!
