    Why does windows go bad after a couple months?


    My Win10 1909 keeps going bad every couple months. I usually have to do a complete reinstall to get it back Today some apps freeze and others don't. This includes Windows component apps, leacy apps and Store apps. Earlier I couldn't even get to the BiOS. When did it didn't save my settings This has happened on earlier builds. This happens on a somewhat regular schedule, every 60 days or so. Can anyone explain explain why this happens and maybe how to prevent it Thanks in advance for your help.

    I certainly wouldn't say this is typical of any Win10 installation I've done, which is many. I don't think it's an OS issue. It sounds more of a hardware issue.

    Same here. Sure, some program/s may cause an issue but generally closing it works or simply restarting the computer. I've been running Win10 on several computers since it was RTM/Release To Manufacture/Market plus a couple with the Insider Preview [BETA/Test] version since 2014, not many problems that couldn't be worked out, have had to do a full reinstall only a couple of times.

    Is your installation being properly Activated? Right-click the Start button, click System.

    The part of your computer specs about OS: Windows 10 Home 64 bit 1804 17134 shows an old Version and Build [wasn't a Version 1804], the Version should be 1803 or 1809, might want to get Upgraded to the current Version 1909 Build 18363.815. The Version number is Year and Month, 1909 = 2019 and September.

    Have to say I agree. I've had multiple Windows computers going back to '95 and have never had an issue like this. I have two Windows 10 computers, one came with Windows 10 Home installed and the other is an upgrade from Windows 7. Never had to do a reinstall with either one of them.
    Can you give us full information about this computer, mfgr, model, all installed hardware, hard drive size, CPU, RAM installed, system type, 32 or 64 bit, actual version of Windows 10, i.e. home, pro, etc. Did this computer come with Windows 10 installed or is it an upgrade from 7 or 8? What is this computer generally used for, gaming, live streaming, etc?

    the HWINFO you provided doesn't help us, there too much information that is not relevant. We just need something simple like this Dell Inspiron 15 5000 Laptop -NNLOK5KB3403RT Specs - CNET even this is too much
    I couldn't even get to the BiOS. When did it didn't save my settings
    The Bios is not a part of Windows. It is part of the motherboard and loads before it accesses the HDD/SSD with Windows.
    If you are typically running into problems, then it is more likely an issue with your HDD/SSD or some other Hardware, like RAM etc.Windows doesn't go bad, but your HDD/SSD may have bad sectors on it and it is corrupting your data. Download HDTune from my signature, not Pro. Go to the Error Scan tab. Run a full Error Scan, not Quick.This will take a long time. If all of the boxes are Green, the Drive is Healthy. If any of the Boxes are Red, the drive has Bad Sectors and is beginning to fail. You do not need to finish the test, the drive will need to be replaced.
    Have you tried updating your Bios. Are all drivers updated from the Dell Web site?

    I agree totally with spunk that is certainly more info than needed, way more than requested and extremely hard to read.

    When Windows "goes bad" please describe exactly what happens; freezes? BSOD's? Failure to Boot? exactly what?

    It would be helpful if you described exactly what happens to cause you to believe that a reinstall is the only remedy. This really is very unusual.

    Have you checked the Reliability Monitor? This will show you recent system and application crashes. You can see them arranged by dates with columns at the right representing the most recent days. You can see a history of events for the last few weeks, or you can switch to a weekly view. If Windows crashed or froze, you’ll see a red circle with an “X” representing the failure. Click that day’s column and you’ll see more information at the bottom. Critical events are typically what you’re really looking for here, but you can also see things like when a piece of software was installed too. I certainly would be checking all of that out before reinstalling the entire system. Most of the time the fix is a very easy fix once you know what you are looking for and Reliability Monitor certainly will help you do that. It has been included with Windows since Vista.
    To access Reliability Monitor simply hit Start, type “reliability,” and then click the “View reliability history” shortcut.

    Started over


    I gave up and I had to re-install Win 10. Still won't save any bios settings and some windows settings save and some don't. I tried to use Windows slideshow screensaver. It ran fine until a restart. Now it shows a black screen. I went to the setting and the blank for folder is blank. Using VLC, it saved my hotkey settings but nothing else. Could a bios be corrupted or hacked? I tried to get the bios info and all I got was 1 2 3 (with the spaces), no name. File explorer works fine as well as Google Chrome. If I try to change any of the settings it will work fine until I restart then every thing goes back. The reinstall was done yesterday but it started falling apart right away. I'm sorry to be so annoying but my laptop is my only source of info and entertainment.
