    New Laptop PC: HP (Hewlett-Packard) 255 G7

Friday, May 1st, I get to order my new Laptop "Portable Workstation". It is an HP (Hewlett-Packard) 255 G7. It comes with 4 GB of RAM as standard and a 156 GB SSD. Those 2 will be upgraded. I will upgrade the base RAM to 8 GB unless you all say it's okay to upgrade it to 16 GB as it's compatible up to 16 GB.

As I was reading the specs, I noticed that it is compatible with a hard drive or an ssd. But HP's website looks like it could both have them in it at the same time. I will attach the website link for the specifications to the thread so that you all can see if that's true or not.

I probably won't be doing strenuous tasks (heavy photo editing) like I do on my desktop, but I will be doing some. I am really excited.

A lot of you have asked why I like HP. It's because I already have an HP Desktop, so it's best just to have them linked together through HP's configuration. It's a part of my OCD.

First thing to do after the initial start-up and setup (when Windows is up and running)(, create an image using Macrium Reflect. Consider at what stages during the subsequent setup you will create a new / another image of the progress so far.

Ideal setup - SSD for OS and software, HDD for data. Just make sure you "re-locate" your user data folders (Documents, Downloads, Music etc) to the HDD (there are specific steps for this, it's not just a copy/move > paste)

Nothing wrong with a HP laptop ... just make sure you remove all the HP bloatware that comes with it (all the hardware and software checking rubbish that bogs the computer speed down). Then the 4GB RAM might be adequate for all your needs. Might as well throw in getting rid of all the Windows bloatware to free up a bit of space on the SSD.

@idgat, I always remove the bloatware that I don't need. The Laptop comes with little bloatware out of the box from what I have been reading about it online.

    Memory RAM & SSD Upgrades | hp - compaq | hp business notebooks | HP 255 G7 (AMD Ryzen) | Crucial.com

I'm a little confused about what M.2 drives it takes. Crucial only offers SATA, but apparently some versions of the 255 G7 can use PCI-E 3.0 X4 NVME drives. I wonder which one you will get? https://support.hp.com/nz-en/document/c06194380#AbT5

@bobkn, it's the one with the AMD E2 processor. Yes I understand that one is a little slower than the others, but that's all I could find at the time. I use my desktop for my heavy photo editing, so it shouldn't matter about performance. I have read online that the computer is relatively quick no matter which processor it has in it. I think that has to do with the SSD.

SSDs can make navigating Windows fairly snappy.

I wonder if the low-end 255 G7 comes with an M.2 slot? I saw somehing ont he Web that suggests that it may not.

I've got several M.2 drives (laptop internal and USB enclosures external) .. one of the biggest problems I had was getting my head around the various different keys - M, B and/or B & M ... hence the reason I have several, after having bought the wrong one(s) several times.

Before you purchase a notebook make sure that you know whether the RAM is easily accessed or whether you will have to remove the keyboard.

The connections to the motherboard can be damaged unless you are comfortable working in this area.

    This is from the specifications:

    Code:
     Specification

    Description
    Standard

    DDDR4-PC4 SODIMMS
    (2) Dual-channel SODIMM slots (slots are non-accessible/non-upgradable)
Runs at 2400 MT/s for AMD Ryzen Mobile processors
Runs at 1866 MT/s for 7th Generation AMD APU processors
    Configurations

    16 GB DDR4-2400 SDRAM (8 GB x 2)
    8 GB DDR4-2400 SDRAM (8 GB x 1)
    8 GB DDR4-2400 SDRAM (4 GB x 2)
    8 GB DDR4-1866 SDRAM (8 GB x 1)
    4 GB DDR4-2400 SDRAM (4 GB x 1)
    4 GB DDR4-1866 SDRAM (4 GB x 1)
    Maximum

    16 GB DDR4-2400 SDRAM
    8 GB DDR4-1866 SDRAM
