    Problems since last couple of updates


    Some time after the last Windows update (maybe 2) I have a few issues.
    1. I no longer can get icons in my pictures folder only the Microsoft Photo icon. I have tried all the suggested fixes, but nothing works.
    2. My earplug jack isn't working properly. I plug in my earbud style earphone but the laptop speakers are still engaed and no sound from the earphones. Again, I have tried all the suggested fixes - no luck.
    3. Home screen icons disappear randomly. I have to make a new shortcut.

    This laptop has ALWAYS had issues with freezing up randomly.

    1. I think this will help you with the problem of only seeing the Microsoft photo icon ( blue mountain)
    Enable or Disable Thumbnail Previews in File Explorer in Windows 10
    I do not of course know if that is ONE of the fixes you have tried.

    2. Re the "laptop has always had freezing issues - please see this
    BSOD - Posting Instructions
    USE THE V2 LOG COLLECTOR please and see the upload the zip directly to your post

    When you have done that I will then peruse the logs to see if I can offer advice on the general issue of the freezing and address the earplug issue as well

    Please report the success or otherwise of the icon issue

    Sorry for the delay. I will upload the zip file here. As for the thumbnails, your suggestion has been tried a couple times with no effect. Hope the upload works.

    1. Will look at the logs but it will not be until late tonight
    When you say the suggestion for the thumbnails instead of the icon has been tried, as you have home, you cannot use Group Policy, but have you tried option 3 please on the link and will you also please check option 2 to see what is set in visual effects

    2. Will post later but it is likely to be late tonight or even early hours - after midnight UK time - as you can see below I have done.

    3. There is only one crash dump on the 8 July 2019 so it is not worthwhile examining at this stage

    4. Have you at anytime noticed problems with the time and date shown on the windows desktop.

    5. You have some Epsom software installed

    It appears to be causing problems
    You can always reinstall that if necessary, I suggest you uninstall from Settings - right of notifications area and then apps.

    6. There is a firmware update for that SKHynix SSD drive SC 311

    7. You will note that it solves problems with the drive not waking properly from sleep
    PLEASE NOTE IMPORTANT - as below

    8. On the link you will see the advice regarding the importance of ensuring you are on mains power and also ensuring you have a system image preferably before updating the firmware. IF you have such then I recommend you proceed - if you DO NOT have an image, as a means of recovery, then although I recommend the update, I would leave it for the time being.

    9. Open a command prompt with admin rights please
    that is type cmd in search on taskbar
    when it appears above right click and click run as admin

    at the prompt type
    sfc /scannow
    PLEASE report results, I do not need the logs at this stage.

    10. If it reports errors could not be fixed.
    on the cmd prompt
    copy and paste

    DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth

    You must be connected to the internet to run that cmd as it relies on windows update if necessary to repair system files.

    Again if you run that because of the sfc failure to repair, please just report the result.

    This is what scannow came up with:

    I may have solved the earphone issue. I went to settings, apps to uninstall the realtek driver instead of from the device manager. It seems to have worked for now. The icons matter is still present after following all your suggestions. Thanks for the input on the system freeze up, I will let you know in a few days if it freezes up again. It was a daily occurence.

    Well done regarding the earphone issue.
    As you say please let me know if it freezes.

    that is out of date
    I do not yet know if it is the problem
    I recommend you go here and install the latest version

    Note please as on the link
    Please note: Always remove/uninstall the previous version before updating!

    Try this please, if you have not already done so

    type disk clean-up
    in search bar on taskbar
    It will appear above as soon as you get as far as Di - probably
    right click and click run as admin
    on the window that opens choose C drive on the drop arrow, if it is not already on such
    Click OK
    when it has finished searching and the selection appears, you may safely select all of the items
    However what you are really looking for, in this regard is the thumbnails
    Select that and others as you wish and click OK
    Wait for that to complete and the window disappear

    RESTART the computer and check when you open a jpeg etc image in the pictures folder, if it then displays, the correct thumbnail
