    A couple of quick comments:
    a. Avoid Optane
    b. The major advantage of having a SSD is boot time - say 12-13s to lock screen from cold boot.

Perhaps you could better define 'average use' ... just browsing? shopping? emails? Basic photo processing?

(I had a PC with a 366MHz processor that could deal with that and playing DVDs!)

Optane is not bad if you really want fast starts.

I replaced mine with a Nvme m2 evo which I boot from.
I'm not concerned with fast boots, which took 24 seconds (according to Glary utilites)

Optane merely acts as a Hard drive cache .
I didn't like because it acts in a Raid format with the Hard drive.

    Hi there
these days any modern cpu is capable for "average jobs" -- I wouldn't worry about mega fast "sub second" boots -- how many times during a typical computer session would a user re-boot anyway !!! (I say typical because I know a lot of people on these boards are always tinkering around.

I'd go for the best graphics you can afford (also if pos with HDMI audio / Video at 4k UHD to external monitor) -- I'd prefer an i5 type cpu rather than an i3 , get 16GB RAM and absolutely essential have the main (or only) HDD as an SSD -- doesn't really matter if it's a "classical" SSD or the newer Nvme type of things.

Slow disks will kill ANY computer stone dead -- even a super cray !!!!!!.

A Laptop might be a better choice -- depends on what you want to do mainly on the machine

Depending on your budget and whether you will be carrying the laptop around --then LIGHTNESS is also important -- HP envy sleekbooks are good for lightness and nice screens. A heavy laptop IMO is a waste of time --as it would be as inconvenient to move as a desktop (which can be built incredibly cheaply now).

YMMV - but I prefer INTEL graphics and CPU which are in general more expensive than the AMD counterparts -- but YMMV.

Lenovo also make some decent laptops but they are usually "Battleship" built -- very rugged and quite heavy as a legacy from the old IBM thinkpad days.

For a desktop you could look at the HP GEN10 Proliant Microserver -- these microservers are actually quite good --and cheap --you need to populate your own HDD's / SSD's -- there's a built in 4 Bay HDD on the front -- I use one these as a NAS server -- I have 4 standard HDD's , and 2 SSD's -- you can use one connector on Mobo for one SSD and for the other simply use the DVD molex connector with SATA adapter for the other SSD. Has 2 Video / Sound outputs (you need DVI-->HDMI adapter(s) if you want to route to separate monitors, and 2 ethernet connectors -- use USB wifi connector if you need wifi.

Advantage of the microserver --very small -- designed to run 24/7 (it's built as a server) and low power consumption--you'll need to install your own OS -- although I'm running it as a NAS Linux server it easily runs Windows 10 without any problems and there's loads of USB3 ports too.

    Cheers

Currently you have 4Gb RAM- that's lowish.

Slow? Check your task manager when your PC is nominally idle. Is there excessive resource use?

How much free disk space do you have on C: ?

Sorry all the figures confuse me. Had a few computers but always bought whatever was in my price range and had a good size hard drive
Always used a desktop pc Never use a laptop.
All I understand so far is avoid Optane. My 1TB hard drive is half full, but I keep a lot of stuff on an external
Which of the 3 pcs would suit me best?

How many cores does your AMD have got? Anyway that line of processors weren't the fastest ones to begin with. But if you have got 4C+ you could live with it. Biggest improvement would come by increasing memory to 8GB and replacing HDD with an SSD.

PS - You can also make sure Windows is not running in compressed form, because it adds some noticeable overhead.

Run (open a cmd.exe admin prompt): compact /compactos:query

If it says system is compressed...

    compact /compactos:never

    and then

    compact /u /a /i /s /exe c:\*

being C your Windows drive letter.
