Acer e15 core i5 8th gen 256 GB SSD 8GB RAM
I came across this directory and am very curious to know - is it accumulated junk? Can I delete and reclaim space?

with many esoteric folders which have 2 sub folders- r and f - each w/ one .mui file.
Perplexing just to think someone coded this!!

On one of my Notebooks that LCU folder is twice the size of yours. Looks like they are part of Version Upgrades or Build updates to those. Unless short on drive space I'd leave them alone.
To do with Windows updates.
Mine was 2.2GB, ran Disk clean-up and Clean-up system files (i.e. let Windows decide what to keep and/or get rid of)... now just over 700MB

...no one in that thread (including me) reported any problems after just deleting the files/folders in the LCU folder.
LCU stands for Last Cummulative Update. It seems it's just a backup folder in case you may want to uninstall latest CU. I just make a backup copy using Macrium Reflect before installing any new CU. I have had no issues deleting that folder contents.
Does the LCU folder just keep on growing or does Windows manage it so it is, say, just the last CU / Version update residuals and therefore never bigger than a few GB?

It tends to keep on growing because files are added after any CU.
I am in a position to test this, having a VM that was yet to get the April 'Patch Tuesday' CU, or the latest optional CU that followed.
Initially LCU held just the one folder....
Installing the 'Patch Tuesday' CU increased that to two...
...and then installing the optional 'D' CU added a third.
But Disk Clean-up's 'Windows Update Clean-up' then removed all but the latest one. So no, it won't grow if you use Disk Clean-up regularly.
