    Why? Desktop icons 4 installed programs must be application icons?

    Desktop: HP / Win Version 1909 (this has been installed for a good while now. No issues I know)
    Had to shorten the Thread Subject:

    I have recently installed several programs that when installed they threw an icon on the desktop that is not a shortcut. It is an application icon. They seem to fight being removed or disallow it. For someone that wants a certain amount of control for what is cluttering up their desktop this is OCD close to overflow.

    Browser MX5
    inSSIDer Home WiFi manager
    Dragon Naturally Speaking Home Ed.

    How or what can be done about these applications program "shortcuts'' that resist removal?

    Thanks for very much for any knowledge on this. jack ";-}

    I tried moving them into a folder I place temporary documents, etc. When I do it says there is not enough memory. Try again and Try Again does not work?

    From MS:
    To determine the amount of available physical memory on the computer, follow these steps:
    • Start the Task Manager tool. To do this, click Start, click Run, type taskmgr in the Open box, and then click OK.
    • Click the Performance tab.
    • Under Physical Memory (K), view the amount of RAM next to Available.

      Note The value is shown in kilobytes (KB). A value of 2 GB translates to 2,097,152 KB.

    See if closing some apps might allow you to move those programs into a new folder.

    You won't, it's either B for Bytes or KiloByte or MegaByte or GigaByte or TeraByte.

    Yes, I'm sure that's good but I have hardly a thing running. It says on my tasktray I'm only using 24% of my Ram. These are just stubborn application icons, not the regular shortcuts like most programs display on the desktop. I wonder, it's as if when I try to move them to a created folder it's trying to move the complete program? Trying to move the whole program folder? It's not every program, just these 3 so far.

    Here is the target of one in the icon properties.
    "C:\Program Files (x86)\Nuance\NaturallySpeaking12\Program"

    It's as if the .exe is on the desktop. I do not see where the above address has an exe?

    I checked at this address and there is an netspeak.exe there? Even when I try to delete them, the desktop icons, nothing happens. Darn programmer deciding what they like more than the user. Of course I paid for this program. I ought to have some control.

    Oh well, there's worse things to deal with. eh? Thanks, jack ":-}

    Those icons may appear on your desktop ... but they might not be in your desktop folder!
    They might be in the shared "All Users" desktop folder at C:\Users\Default\Desktop

    This folder, and the items in it, might be owned by the administrator or by "Trusted Installer".
    This usually means you cannot change or delete the contents ... until you first change the folder permissions.

    The memory error is a red herring. I've seen it before in this circumstance. It's a Microsoft fubar.

    BTW, programs usually put their shortcuts in that shared desktop folder when you choose "install for all users".

    Instead, choose "install for me only". That will put the shortcuts in your desktop folder.
    And you'll own the shortcuts. And you'll be able to move them or delete them at will.

    I always choose just for me. In all my years of adding programs, since 1996, most programs put a shortcut on the desktop. I usually just delete them or chose now most times no shortcut for the desktop. These icons, of these particular programs showed up on the desktop despite. And while they have the shortcut indicator they are applications. And won't be moved, deleted, etc. ":-\\
