Error during migrate data operation - Upgrading Win 7 to 10

Failed in FIRST_BOOT Phase - error during migrate data operation when upgrading to Windows 10 from 7

My win version is Windows 7 Build 7601 Service Pack 1

As the title suggests. I'm attempting to upgrade to Windows 10 from 7 with Media Creation tool.

The actual Error code is: 0x800707E7- 0x3000D "The installation failed in the FIRST_BOOT phase with an error during MIGRATE_DATA operation"

    It happens when:

    • I attempt to upgrade this PC with all apps and files saved through create windows media tool.
    • It will restart once and then get to 57% and then restart and says it's Undoing changes made to your computer

    Things I have tried:

Removing all unnecessary USB devices (All I have are my mouse and keyboard).

    • I have 200GB free
    • disabled windows defender
    • file scan for corruption
    • ran microsoft diagnostic tools
    • No registry or corruption errors

I have checked Windows32/Panther/** for anythign in setuperr.log but nothing. I do have logs in setupact.log but I can't make sense of it.

Any help or where to look for crash dumps, error logs to debug this? I'm a dev but I'm not familiar with the windows ecosystem.

I also would rather not do a clean install as I have many games and configuration files set up and I do not want to have to reset them.

    Thanks for any help!

    Welcome to the forum @acspock

    From here

    https://docs.microsoft.com/en-gb/win...dy_UpgradeTips

    Document has lots of detail.

There is a diagnostic job, doesn't usually yield much.

Thanks Ken! I'll give that link a swirl and see if I can make progress.

I did find this error log in setupact.log

    Code:
2020-04-16 12:34:48, Error SP pSPExecuteApply: Migration phase caught exception: Win32Exception: User profile suffix mismatch, upgrade cannot continue: The specified profile is intended for a device of a different type than the specified device. [0x000007E7] enum MIGSTATUS __cdecl pSPExecuteApply(enum SetupPlatform::SP_MIG_SCOPE,class UnBCL::String *,int, int, int, class UnBCL::ArrayList<class UnBCL::String *> *,class UnBCL::String *,class UnBCL::String *,class UnBCL::ArrayList<class UnBCL::DictionaryEntry<class UnBCL::String *,class UnBCL::String *> *> *,class UnBCL::String *,int, int, class UnBCL::String *,class UnBCL::String *,class UnBCL::String *,class UnBCL::String *,class UnBCL::String *,class UnBCL::String *,class UnBCL::ArrayList<class CWIMBootData *> *,class UnBCL::String *,int *,class CSPTelemetryData *,struct ISPMigProgress *,long *)
2020-04-16 12:34:48, Info SP SPExecuteFirstBootApply: End run. Result: 0x00000004
2020-04-16 12:34:48, Error SP Apply (first boot apply, online phase): Migration phase failed. Result: 4, specific error: 0x800707E7[gle=0x00000002]
    Code:
Migration phase caught exception: Win32Exception: User profile suffix mismatch, upgrade cannot continue: The specified profile is intended for a device of a different type than the specified device
On further inspection I found this line on the PS chain

    Code:
0-04-16 12:34:47, Warning SP User profile suffix mismatch: upgrade asked for "UpdatusUser", actual suffix is: "UpdatusUser.000"
I do have a updatusUser but I don't know why. I will delete and delete the registry values and try again.

Sorry I don't. Another member may.

Do you have any old, dead, not in use users on your machine. Not saying to delete anything just asking are there any?

    Hey Ken, I updated my response above. I found some more log files complaining about a "UpdatusUser" I might have made a while ago toying with my system. I'm going to remove the folder under C:\Users and remove the values from my registry Profile list (of course after backing it up :));

I really love those words, "after backing it up"

    Good luck

    Excellent.

I meant, I backed up my registry before deleting my files. Just exporting the registry as a whole .

I did not back up my windows partition/disc before upgrading. I also moved all my game files to my HDD before upgrading just in case I had to do a clean install.

    Cheers!

Now that you are on Win 10 I strongly recommend you start Imaging.

    One idea.

Backup and Restore with Macrium Reflect

It is free and very good.

Easier to restore than re-install. At least yearly we get a full feature update, with one coming very soon.

Glad you got to 10 and hope to see you in the forums.
