Why won't my laptop *sleep* anymore?

Until recently, I put my laptop to Sleep every night by clicking on the Windows icon (lower left). Recently, clicking on this icon won't put my computer to sleep - but I don't get a message telling me why. Is it possible I have something running that prevents it from going to sleep? Thank you.......

You are mistaken. There is no Windows function to put the computer to sleep when you click on the Start button. You would not have been able to use the Start menu if that had been the case.

I suppose it's possible that you had some third-party utility set up to respond that way and it is that utility that has stopped working. But given the use to which the Start button is put I would be surprised if anything attempted to interfere with it deliberately.

    Hi Nisko, check option 1 here;

And/or there's always sleep available with a few clicks.

hmmm, I think that's available. At least it is using Classic shell start menu.

Wondering if the OP just didn't fully explain the exact steps involved ... not just simply by "clicking on the Windows icon", but Start > Power > Sleep ?

    You're correct - I didn't fully explain what I did

What I did was brought up the Window (Start Menu?), left clicked on "Shut down or sign out", a drop down appeared and it had four choices:
    1. Sign Out
    2. Sleep
    3. Shut Down
    4. Restart
I left clicked on Sleep. The only thing I'm aware of what I did was place Skype in the Startup Group. Hope that clarifies exactly what I did. I haven't yet tried the other options you folks showed me - but will if I can't put my Laptop to sleep the way I'm used to. Thank you.

    Didn't you mean

So what happens when you do that now?

That's what I *used* to do to put my laptop to sleep. It used to work. Now, going through the same steps, it doesn't work.

    1) change the power options like the others suggested. Settings/System/Power & sleep/Additional power settings. Try programming the power button tap or lid close options to Sleep and Test. Screenshots here

    2) if this fails, test turning Hibernation to Off by opening command prompt or powershell (admin) {don't worry, this is easily reversible}. Type powercfg -h off then Enter.
Confirm by going back to the 'additional power options screen and Hibernate will not be there anymore, like on my system screenshot above where I've had it off for years to disable Fast startup.
Try Sleep now (or better yet, after a reboot). If fixed, great. If not and you actually use Hibernate, simply replace off with on in the command prompt. Good Luck

    Will do!

Problem solved. It was because I had added Skype to my Startup apps. For some reason, that prevented my laptop from "sleeping." Thanks again to all for your help.
