Computer Randomly Starts Up during Night

    Hello All,

First time poster. I have an active account on Windows 7 Help Forum as well.

I upgraded my desktop from Windows 7 to Windows 10 about 6 months ago. The installation went without a hitch and I like Windows 10. I am having an odd issue which I cannot stop. At some point in the night, my computer turns itself back on. I am not sure if this happens at the same time or not but it happens just about every morning. To stop the computer from self-starting, I have turned off the switch on the power supply.

I have tried a bunch of google searches and I have tried to implement the changes that are recommended. I have disabled everything that i can find that relates to a mouse, keyboard or network which would cause the PC to start on its own. I also disabled a feature whereby the PC will turn itself on to check for any updates. Nothing seems to work. I did contact the MOBO manufacturer and they said to reset the CMOS. I can do that but I thought it was a bit drastic. My Mobo is a ASRock Z97 Extreme6 LGA 1150.

Is there a way to look in a log to see what process or peripheral is causing the PC to turn on by itself?
Is there anything else I can try to stop the PC from self-starting?

    Thanks, Bill

Hi bpatters69. Welcome to TenForums @bpatters69

When it wakes up open command prompt (admin) and type command

    powercfg -lastwake

It will tell you what woke it up. Likely Windows schedule maintenance which you can change.

Thanks Ken. I used the powercfg -lastwake command but it was not directly after the self wake up occurred. I ran it the next day after I started the computer normally.

I will post what it says. If I recall, when I ran the command the next day, it said something about keyboard and one or 2 other items. I have disabled all of the maintenance activities that start up the computer. Maybe there are more.

    Andre

Good tips. I will try them later today.

Question for you. Sorry to take things literally but the options you list show what devices can wake my PC from a sleep state. I shut down my PC every night so it is not in a sleep state, its shut down. Does that matter?

    Thanks, Bill

    Yes it does.

Sounds like it is getting a Wake on Lan.

Do you have other devices in house?

Think you said you shut down the ability of all devices to wake, correct?

Specifically, device manager, lan or wifi network adapter, properties, Power Mgmt tab, remove check mark.

If so I would enter the BIOS, some BIOS's have the ability to power on devices at specific times.

    Ken,

    My answers are in bold

Do you have other devices in house?
Yes. I have tablets, laptops, TVs which are all connected to the LAN. All totaled, i think there are 20.

Think you said you shut down the ability of all devices to wake, correct?
I tried. I have followed several online guides and stopped any device's ability to turn the PC on. Like I said, my PC is not asleep, its shut down and something is causing it to turn on.

Specifically, device manager, lan or wifi network adapter, properties, Power Mgmt tab, remove check mark.
    Thanks. Will check

If so I would enter the BIOS, some BIOS's have the ability to power on devices at specific times.
Yes. There are options in the BIOS and i have disabled those.

Yes that matter. This is strange
If it is shut down, only BIOS, and special lan packet can wake it up. Shouldn't happen. Check power options, maybe the button is set to sleep or hibernate

    Andre,

Are you saying that when I shut down, I am actually putting my PC to sleep vs shutting it down?

    Thanks, Bill

Just guessing, as it is not logical.. Do you shut down with button, or with Windows click?

check this setting in Control panel
