    Perhaps those apparently blank lines in the email contained active elements that reported back?

    That was the original explanation a decade or more ago of why we should always disable the display of graphics in emails, I think.

    Back in July of 2019 there was a policy change about canceling any Microsoft account which had not shown any activity during a two year period.

    @Brink alerted us to it then, and it was talked about here:

    New Microsoft account activity policy

    The email account I have associated with my Microsoft account got a similar email back then alerting me to this policy change.

    Ah, yes I see, thanks. I got distracted by this account deletion issue that was mentioned.

    Looks like someone else got this same scam-mail in February and posted to the Microsoft's answers forum including a screen shot of the email. In that case there was poison pdf link.
