Windows 10 change desktop to laptop to take advantage of metering

In 2015 I moved to the country and had to use satellite internet which comes with data limits. Since I had already upgraded my Windows 7 custom built mid-tower to Windows 10 I had a problem with Windows 10 automatically downloading updates. Since my chassis was defined as a desktop I could take advantage of the WIFI Metering option. I found a "hack" in the registry to make my computer look like a Laptop and suddenly I have the metering option and control over update downloads. Point to Point wireless internet is now available without data restrictions so I ditched the satellite and data restrictions. I want to return my chassis designation back to desktop as I get battery recommendations etc with the laptop designation. The problem is that I can't find the instructions I used to do this, if anyone is familiar with this procedure I would appreciate your help.

    2. With reference to the above quote from your opening post, I do not quite follow all the detail
A metered connection CAN be set on a desktop. It does NOT have to be a laptop. - should your post in fact read, as far as you are concerned
Since my chassis was defined as a desktop I could NOT take advantage of the WIFI Metering option. (etc)
    3. I so set it for someone, when they were using a desktop that could not handle well, the updating from Microsoft for 10.

    4. To check that the situation is still the same I have just so set it on this desktop, thinking that the newer version of 10 may also have changed that, as it has other settings . Please see my screenshot.

    5. I suggest you check, whether using that setting on my screenshot, you are in fact on metered connection, irrespective of your registry tweak to - make your computer look like a laptop. Although I read on your post that you have already as you say ditched the settings

    6. Additionally new versions of 10 when they are issued by update or indeed by you updating from Microsoft - do I think re-write such tweaked registry keys. ARE you saying please that you are still running the same version as when you tweaked it.

    7. Although it is too late now - please be advised for your future use of the registry that it is the best advice to always backup the registry key before you change it. Not only in case the change produces problems, but also for purposes such as this.

    8. I have no idea which registry key you tweaked to make this change you describe, as I cannot see why you would need to set a registry key to make a desktop think it is a laptop.

    10. Possibly someone else on the forum may have an idea of what your regedit tweak may have been
In the absence of any such suggestion and presuming you are not using a UPS, as that depending on aspects can produce battery warning.

If not and the warning appears in the notifications and the computer does indeed think it is a laptop then try this
    Open Settings app.
    Select System.
Click on Notifications & actions tab

see if battery is listed. If so turn it off

Did you actually mean that you did a Registry alteration to allow your Ethernet connection to be set to metered [your Ethernet connection to the router/modem which was, in turn, connected to your satellite connection]? Many desktop users have done this but it is the LAN connection that they altered not the nature of the computer itself.

Well spotted I overlooked that possibility.

As above, I missed that you may indeed be talking about the regedit for ethernet.
However I am still confused, as you say this tweak was back in 2015 and unless I am wrong - as I said

Additionally new versions of 10 when they are issued by update or indeed by you updating from Microsoft - do I think re-write such tweaked registry keys. ARE you saying please that you are still running the same version as when you tweaked it.
If I remember correctly version updates were not offered on metered connections.

If the suggestion by my colleague, in the link he provides you with, does not work, and my suggestion for turning of notifications, is of no use, then I suggest a possibility is to update to the latest version of 10, if you are not already on that and IF you are and you are still wanting to fix it, a repair install from WITHIN windows 10, should see it corrected.

I see that most folks are confused. It appears the desktop metering restriction has been removed so that the conversation to get around the issue has faded away. Can't really mark as solved, but since this is only an irritation and not a hindrance I think I will just let this ride. I was hoping to find someone that knew about this workaround, I did it around 2016.

While not an answer this article, and links within, might help you remember what key you changed.

Not sure what version you are on but the suggestion to update to latest may overwrite the changes you made.

I think with respect that part of the confusion was caused by you, not clearly explaining the situation
    As I commented
    8. I have no idea which registry key you tweaked to make this change you describe, as I cannot see why you would need to set a registry key to make a desktop think it is a laptop.
and indeed my colleague mentioned on post 3.

Additionally have checked your registry to see if the change suggested in the link that my colleague sent you, has in fact been implemented in your registry.

Also have you tried to see if you can stop that warning, as I suggested in the notifications area.

    Hope you get it sorted
