    Accessories don't want to work

    Windows 10 Version 1903

My computer worked fine last night and I rarely shut it off; just put it to sleep.

When I tried to sign in this morning there was some gray window and I can't remember what it said, but something about pushing the F7 key.

When my desktop loaded back up I could not get any movement no matter what I did. I had to force a shutdown. I restarted, and checked updates. There were a couple ready so I clicked Install. On one of them I got a message that it failed because some files were missing or something and I should try again so I did. This time it installed. The update in question was KB4537572 to do with Net Framework 3.5 and 4.8.

I noticed that earlier KB4534132 (13), also the Net Framework 3.5 and 4.8, had failed to install. I include this info in case it has something to do with my present problem.

I can open things but, for instance, I click on the volume icon in my taskbar and it opens fine but I can not move the slider. I open Snipping Tool and select new and the screen grays out like it's supposed to. But when I get my crosshair and try to draw around what I want to take a screenshot of nothing happens.

I just went back to my desktop and tried the volume slider and the Snipping Tool again and both of them worked this time, after messing around with this for at least 30 minutes. But I'm going to post this anyway and ask, has anyone else had a similar problem to this, or does anyone know what could have caused all this?

    Thank you.

Hi, do you use disk imaging routinely as is so often recommended here?

Have you checked your disk? E.g. HDTune v2.55, Health and Error Scan tabs?

    If that's ok, then run
    chkdsk c: /scan
from an admin command or Powershell prompt.

    If that's ok, then run
    SFC /SCANNOW
from an admin command or Powershell prompt and post the summary result.

If those all pass, and if you still have problems, please create a new user for test purposes, log in as that user, and then see if you still have problems.

When you have checked your disk, file system, and integrity of system files, we'll know more.

    Accessories don't want to work

I have followed through with your instructions and everything seemed to be ok as far as I know.

What I'm having trouble with now is my cursor. It only works part of the time.

-I select a file/folder and hold to move it and instead it will flash open.
-I try to select text and it will only select a few letters, or a word.
-I try to scroll through items in a window and the scroll bar along the left side will only move so far and no further. I then have to
resort to clicking on the arrow.

There are a few other little things that have been happening, sporadically, too but I can't remember them all right now.

Hi, your laptop may be from around 2012. As such, there could well be odd quirks. No guarantee in upgrading to Win 10.
Or are you referring to your desktop as you list two PCs?

-I select a file/folder and hold to move it and instead it will flash open.
-I try to select text and it will only select a few letters, or a word.
-I try to scroll through items in a window and the scroll bar along the left side will only move so far and no further. I then have to
resort to clicking on the arrow.
That may be related to your mouse/mouse driver- have you tried a different mouse? And if this is your laptop, what happens if you use your touchpad?

Again, have you tried a different mouse: what type is it/how connected?

Have you just received a graphics or mouse driver or any other update for example?

What happens if you use a System restore point if you have one?
