Location not available

Hi
Switched on laptop yesterday, windows 10 update started automatically. Took about an hour then a power surge. Powered up the laptop again , got the log in screen for my pin but then screen goes blank except for continually flashing the "Location not available" window and the search box at the bottom of the screen.

I have tried most youtube so called "easy fixes" and none have worked

Have tried to attached a movie of what happens and image of the screen but don't think it has worked

Any new ideas please people?

Hi, given an update may have been interrupted then clearly such an arbitrary interruption can have unpredictable consequences.

Did the power surge happen whilst the update was being applied rather than being downloaded?

Are you already running build 1909- was this a cumulative update or a build upgrade? If the latter, that would be an even bigger risk.

Your simplest option would be to restore a disk image you recently created. tenforums members continually and tirelessly recommend the routine and repeated use of disk imaging. E,g. Macrium reflect (free- paid) - intended to provide you an easy and stress-free means of recovery and backup.

I would start by booting your PC from a live boot disk, and running a check on your disk with e.g. HDTune v2.55. E.g a boot disk built with this iso with a number of tools included:

Before you go too far, Windows will always create a system restore point automatically before applying an update in case exactly this sort of thing happens. When you power on your PC, hold F11 while its on the boot screen (where your manufacturer's logo shows up), then, from the list of options, click System Restore and follow the prompts.
Note: be sure to pick the latest restore point so you don't lose data.
