So after some recent update one of my Windows 10 machines is first showing preview images of files instead of the old behaviour where it filtered the results in the active folder/subfolders. Ofcourse if you press enter on the results it acts as the old way, but its an extra step and a useless feature for me.
Can anyone give me a clue on how to disable this?

Hi, search has been modified by MS in build 1909. I'm guessing you're comparing the way it worked to build 1903 with that of build 1909.
If you search for e.g.
search broken in 1909
you will find articles and comments on search in 1909.
There are several threads and comments on this in tenforums.
MS has released at least one update attempting to correct the problems people have experienced: build 20H1 should deal with these although search syntax is still not coloured blue in that as it always has been.
If you wish to revert to build 1903 (as I did when I first experienced some of the problems as reported), search will be fully functional and does not behave as you show.

That's a great idea- but I wonder if it would work in 20H1, should someone wish to do that. The article also warns
Unfortunately, this is not a permanent solution. Windows 10 may revert your change at any moment with an update. Or, Microsoft may remove the underlying code which provides this classic functionality.
Hi Dalchina, It is a good idea, and I did read that it is not permanent, just see how it goes. Here is the version I am on.
