Whilst the particular problem I had is not the same as yours [see post #8 of the Tutorial] I think there is enough similarity for it to be worth your while trying this

II tried that Denis, no go. I replicated the OP's problem exactly. I have an External with a large music collection on it, in many folders, so was easy to play with. I noticed one thing I believe has a bearing on it, but I do not know why. It's just too coincidental.

If you right click a column, notice NAME is greyed out. Click on the MORE at the bottom for the whole template list of columns. Name is checked, and you can't un-check it, but you can move it up and down the list order.

That seems to indicate NAME is hard coded as first in retained sort sequence regardless of what you do. I don't know why MS did that or what the rationale was. But it fits the OP's dilemma perfectly.

I don't bother with Explorer for such things. If you can't work it out consider portable Tablacus Explorer (It does not replace Explorer)

Cannot permanantly sort items in Windows Explorer-tablacus-explorer.jpg

With "Remember Folder View" add on you can choose how many folders you want to remember view for.

Cannot permanantly sort items in Windows Explorer-remember-folder-view-tablacus-explorer.jpg

If you've never used it before - it could be tricky to configure.

Tablacus Explorer is a tabbed file manager with Add-on support.

    Add ons:

    Tablacus Explorer Add-ons

    My addons:

Cannot permanantly sort items in Windows Explorer-my-addons-tablacus-explorer.jpg

Cannot permanantly sort items in Windows Explorer-my-addons-2-tablacus-explorer.jpg

    Just an alternative to consider.

I'm not going to be any help then. The only time I have ever had a problem with folders not displaying as I told them to, the fix in that tutorial resolved matters.

I was not referring to that particular aspect of it because I believe that it is just a coincidence that the necessity of displaying the Name column is only being noticed whilst this fault condition is being experienced.
    - I agree that File explorer insists on the Name column being displayed but that fact does not affect my ability to chose any particular sort order.
    - I have not experienced the OP's & your symptom that the chosen Sort order is being lost upon re-examining the folder. My folders behave as desired, they retain whichever sort order I have chosen - I have just rechecked some large audio folders & some large video folders to check this and they retain the DateModified column sorting that I wanted.

I now realise that this comment is not relevant to this problem. Denis

    Best of luck,
    Denis

If you right click on the folder choose propeties the customize then optimize the folder to music and set all the folders to music it should then keep setting for that type of folder

It does, but still takes the "Name" column as it's primary sort criteria.

The PC's only a recent build - I will talk to the company that built it tomorrow

Can you specify columns and pick an order with that?

    SeaFury,

Did you try the tutorial I linked to in post #12? Tomcat found that it did not help in his case.

What I want to achieve is to have each directory sorted by the column title "Contributing Artist". I can click on the ascending/descending column, get it sorted by that column and change directory. When I return, the previously sorted view has reverted to "Name" order.
You're not alone; I'm seeing similar behavior. Music folders don't want to remember their sort preference if the sort property is "Contributing Artist".

I'm still probing & testing, but here's what I see so far:
    • Other metadata sorts are remembered: Album, Album Artist, #, Title were the fields I tested. Would like to know if others see similar results.
    • When you close a folder sorted on 'Contributing Artist' & then re-open, the background context menu reveals that sort has reverted to an "unspecifed" state (no property name bulleted).

If I sort on "Contributing Artists", close & re-open the folder, the sort is forgotten:
Cannot permanantly sort items in Windows Explorer-sort-forgotton.png

    But other tags are remembered:

Cannot permanantly sort items in Windows Explorer-sort-.png

Will poke around more tomorrow. I'm truly curious as to the "why". If you're just annoyed & want something to work, I'd suggest using the "Album Artist" field, since that seems OK with being specifed as the sort field.

Don't know whether you're interested, but for the record ....

There's an alternative to File/Windows Explorer call xplorer2

    The lite (freeware) version
xplorer2 lite: free windows explorer replacement (file manager)

It's only 32-bit, but runs well on a 64-bit system.

Then you can upgrade later to the (paid) 64-bit system if you're happy.
