File and folder count are incorrect after copy

Did a win10 copy of files and folders as a manual backup to an external disk.
Source 2k8 server (via unc path) and destination win10 laptop with external usb drive.
Did properties on the main destination folder and the source afterwards and could see that there was a different in size and amount of files.

Did a new copy with robocopy and at the end on the summary it did successfully copy of all files. The amount is correct.
If I choose properties on the main destination folder, size and amount of files is incorrect.

Searched for a example file name~4.pdf file in the log file and it did copy that file.
If I check the same destination folder for the pdf file I can't see the file but I can see it on the source.
    Show hidden file is activated.
The file isn't listed with dir in cmd (destination folder).

So the file/dir count seems to be wrong and it doesn't show all files.
    Any ideas?

Hidden files, and system files in use. You can't "copy" an OS.

Robocopy is good (because it's so fast), I use it frequently/regularly but it's not perfect. Does the occasional skip so always run another check program.

Why do you want to copy the OS?

Sorry for being inexplicit. Meant a copy in windows 10. It's not OS files. It's working files like pdf, docs etc.

Presumably there were no permissions or file in use issues.

What happens if you now try to copy one of the files that seemingly wasn't copied?

The file already exist. I can't see the file on the win10 machine but it seems already have been copied if I check the robocopy log-file. The file isn't listed with dir in cmd either. Show hidden files is activated. Is it something bad with the ~ sign in the filename?

Is your query actually then this (I'm struggling a bit to understand the issue)?

    a. All the files have actually been copied from source to destination.
    b. The robocopy log file appears to show all files to have been copied
    c. Comparing properties- number of files and size between source and destination- both are different.
    d. Some files aren't shown using dir (CMD) in the destination, but are at source.
    e. Example file ~4.pdf - Viewable (with file explorer?) at source, present in Robocopy log, but not visible using file explorer? in destination.
    f. However a further attempt to copy that file shows it as already being present at the destination PC.

So are you saying that all the files you have a problem with have an unusual filename? Are there any other examples?

Please copy the statements above and amend as necessary.

A screenshot of source and destination files illustrating a missing file or files may make this clearer.

Show the hidden system protected files also. So basically Robocopy says it copied everything, but in the destination folder, there are missing files. Correct?

Yes. I activated system protected files and rebooted, no difference. Also files that I can't see in destination folder. Can't see with dir/a:h either. The permissions seems to be correct like other files that I can see.

If I manually copy the file to desktop I can see the file. Works to open the file. The only thing I react on was the filename.

So Robocopy is wrong then? Are you sure the destination is correct? Try booting into Linux and see if you can see the files. Most likely not, but just to make sure it is not some Windows weird behavior...

    a. Yes. Robocopy log file summary tells exactly the same number. Both for files and folders.

    b. Yes.

    c. Yes.

    d. Yes.

    e. Yes.

    f. Yes.

So are you saying that all the files you have a problem with have an unusual filename? Are there any other examples?
    - I think it's just this example. Havn't found any more missing files. Seems to be the file count that is wrong for certain folders if I check right click > properties. When I browse down those it seems to be the same amount of files and folders. Havn't checked all files and folders yet.

The problematic pdf file seems to be linked to the other pdf-files in the folder.
If I copy the problematic file to another destination it works fine but together with the other files it says replace existing.

A screenshot of source and destination files illustrating a missing file or files may make this clearer.

File and folder count are incorrect after copy-pdf-diff.jpg

One solution is to copy the file to another folder.
