I installed a programme to my pc and when it asked where I would like to install programme files too I selected desktop. This filled my screen with icons related to the programme and since then I have lost all my desktop. Iíve deleted the programme I installed tried system restore but all my desktop files have gone canít even search them? Any ideas please? Thank you

Hi, a very longstanding recommendation is not to keep important files and folders on your desktop.

Do you have a disk image which you have created from which you can recover them? time and again tenforums members recommend the routine use of disk imaging e.g. Macrium reflect (free-paid) to guard against problems and mistakes and give you a second chance.

Or do you have a backup?

Systm Restore does not protect user files.

I can't tell quite what you've done. You say you installed a program and specified it be installed to your desktop, so that would be the installation folder. You might have seen some files, e.g. dll's, exe and possibly folders appear on your desktop.

    You then say
    Iíve deleted the programme
    - I will assume you mean you uninstalled it using its uninstaller.

That should have left your desktop files unchanged.

At no time did you say you have relocated your desktop. Or does your comment
not just my desktop is wrong in regedit?
indicate that at some point you have?

You also say searching for the files failed.

    You can, of course, try
    - Recuva (free) - and run a scan for deleted files

    - Locate32 or Everything by voidtools e.g. - these are often recommended fast search file and foldername indexing tools.

Allow the tool to index your drives, then try a search. Searching is 'instant' and everywhere. That will show if the files exist anywhere on your disk(s).

Thanks for the reply, what happened was I installed a programme from the internet and it asked where would I like the programme files to be installed. And mistakingly I pressed desktop instead of programme files and this places all the files on the desktop. At this point I could not see my old files. So as you said I then uninstalled the programme that then cleared the desktop with all the files related to the programme but my files didnít appear back either. No I havenít relocated my desktop but it seems to be as tho my desktop isnít reading correctly and Iím unsure as to why this would of happened. If I try search for a name of a file that was on my desktop I see a globe icon with the file name there thatís all?

. At this point I could not see my old files.
    - that seems strange.

    Again I suggest

I have no idea. Sorry. It depends if what you're searching for matches something. That might not be what you're looking for st all.

Normally, if you were to select your Desktop to install a program to, it would only add the program files to that location and wouldn't remove your current desktop icons.

Could it be possible you mistakenly deleted your desktop icons along with the program files?

If you didn't empty the Recycle Bin, you might look in it to see if the desktop items may still be there to restore from.

Did you look in your C:\Users\<username>\Desktop folder to see what is showing in it?

Brink, would a repair install recover the default desktop? I mean after OP has exhausted all means of searching for and recovering any recoverable desktop folders and files?
