    Getting blank/black screen


    I wonder if anyone can help me.

    I am running Windows 10 on Toshiba Satellite laptop.
    After entering my password the screen goes blank and no operations are possible. I have tried the in built Windows recovery options but using the repair option it eventually returns to the recovery screenbut makes no difference on re-boot. Using the reset option gives me an error message that it has encountered a problem and can’t continue. Using the “sfcscannow” command from the command prompt also gives an “encountered a problem and can’t continue” error.
    In safe mode I get the same error. Also, in safe mode the search box and start key appear to be disabled and I can’t key in to the search box or click the start button to get the device manager.
    The laptop cam preloaded and I don’t have a recovery disk.

    Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Hi, I'm going to assume you haven't discovered how valuable the routine use of disk imaging can be- so often recommended by members here. If you had a recent disk image you could restore your PC to a previous good state. E.g. Macrium Reflect (free or paid).

    History:
    - did this suddenly happen?
    - has your PC been demonstrating problems for some time, then this happened?
    - when was the last time you checked your disk?
    - is there anything you can think led to this e.g. you tried to update or upgrade it, or have just installed or uninstalled somehting?

    The laptop cam preloaded and I don’t have a recovery disk.
    All Windows 10 builds can be freely downloaded at any time.

    I suggest you create a live boot disk (you'll need access to another PC for that) e.g.
    Toolkit Item: Kyhi’s Rescue Disk – Win10.Guru

    - Download the iso then use Rufus or appropriate commands to create a bootable flash drive. (Examples in tutorial here to create a bootable disk to install Win 10).

    - Boot your PC from that (you may need to change boot prioty in your BIOS)

    - Run HD Tune from the live boot disk to check your internal disk, Health and Error scan tabs and report the result.

    - If ok, run
    chkdsk X: /scan
    from a command prompt, where X: is the drive letter for your Windows partition. (As seen from the command prompt it may not be C:)
