Heart Attack Every Time I Restart Win 10 ver 1909

The idea of restarting my computer absolutely paralyzes me. Each time I do I am first greeted with a blue screen asking for me to choose a language for my keyboard. After selecting EN the next screen has a list of six things I can do (SysRestore, Uninstall Update, Open Command Prompt, etc). One of the options is one to recover the drive which will blow out all files and folders. It normally takes 10 minutes to get to the Start Screen and I feel lucky to get there. It's as though Windows can't find the installation drive. Why is this happening instead of the computer simply restarting like every other version of Windows I've ever had?

It sounds like you are in an Advanced Startup mode. Have you ever enabled that mode of startup? Is this a recent problem?

    System Manufacturer/Model Number: Custom ......

How did you set up your 'custom' computer? Upgrade from/ or new PC with Win10?

I upgraded a couple of days before support for Win 7 expired. The upgrade was downloaded and installed from the Microsoft website.

BTW - I have never checked the startup mode so I guess I never changed it. Yes....this is very recent. The first time this occured was about 2 weeks ago when I restarted the computer for the first time. Happened again a few days ago when I restarted because I couldn't remove a bluetooth device.

Thanks! Have you checked all drivers and anything that might possibly out of date for your upgrade version?

Jacee - No I have not. Please understand that Win 10 is a foreighn language to me after using Win 7 for so many years. I don't have the foggiest notion where I would even go to do the updates. Something needs to be done because aside from the restart problem I cant remove a bluetooth keyboard and am face with Updates failures. That for a different thread.

Thanks, Jacee. What I find interesting is that I already have two instances of of the SoftwareDistribution folder in the Windows folder:

Should one be deleted? Both? Contents removed? From which one?

You have to stop Windows Update service to delete SoftwareDistribution folder and reboot your computer after doing so.

You can delete SoftwareDistribution.old folder it does not belong to Windows 10.
