Windows 10 Explorer reload on left click in taskbar in SAFE MOOE

    Hello,

In Windows 1909 18363.693, in SAFE MODE, I have a bothering problem: once entered, each time I click on taskbar (start menu button, explorer icon, etc), all desktop flickers, and explorer is reloaded (taskbar icons disappear and reappear). If I open a shortcut in the desktop it works normally.

It is really annoying: I can't do anything in safe mode. In not safe mode is ok. I have searched info on inet but I have not found anything helpful. Could you help me, please?

EDIT: I have tried sfc /scannow and DSIM and everything is ok. There is no problems shown in the device manager. I have tried to start safe mode with all non-microsoft services disabled (except Norton Internet Security which I can't), and nothing changes.

    Thank you!

Hi, not heard of this before- not surprised you've not found anything elsewhere- but there's always the chance of course.

Please try creating a new user for test purposes. Log in as that user and see if you see the same thing happen and post the result.

Yes, with a new user (just created) safe mode works normally!

So...does it mean it is a corrupted user profile? If so, is there a solution, aside of creating a new one and reinstall and re-configure everything?

    Thank you!

Hi, that's useful, and shows it's about the configuration of the user profile or corruption in that. That still could mean that services or even programs (e.g. shell extensions) could be an issue in the affected account, for example, but an in-place upgrade repair install, for example, would probably not help.

There's no need to clean install as you can create a good user profile.

In your affected account you can have a look at Reliability History and see if the explorer crash shows anything helpful (usually doesn't).

You can try getting a crash report that tells you more-

Otherwise, you can try to quickly compare your two accounts- for example, what shell extensions exist in Safe Mode in each, if any- you can do that fairly quickly.

Similarly compare what processes are running in each case- e.g. a screenshot of task manager, Details taken in one account. log in to the other and compare.

Do you have a system restore point or recently created disk image you could restore, assuming you know this started happening recently?

No, I'm afraid the problem is from some months ago. I did not used safe mode until now, but I think I recall it to be present already then.

I'll look into the explorer crashing diagnostic link (and the whocrashed tool), and see if I could identify the problem. BTW, could I create a new profile and copy the contents of the old one?

    Tx

Of course you could migrate to a new profile and delete the old one..
