    File types tab in advanced indexing options not responding


    Hi,
    I'm using Windows 10, version 1909 (compilation: 18363.693) with Polish language interface.
    When I try to open File types tab in advanced indexing options it doesn't respond, mouse pointer turns into spinning blue circle and nothing happens, the tab does not open.

    After closing the window (using the close button) a message appears: COM Surrogate not responding.

    After closing a message new one appears: The remote procedure call failed.

    Finally after clicking OK button the main window of Indexing options closes.
    I tried to use the sfc /scannow tool that showed no errors and creating new user profile without result.
    I hope someone will help me.

    Hi, creating a new user is a useful check, indicating it's either a Windows problem or something common to the profiles- perhaps a particular program common to both.

    Have you made any changes recently that might relate to this? When did you last know it was working normally?

    If it occurred recently, do you have a system restore point you could use, or a disk image you could restore?

    Given the problems with file explorer search in build 1909, and that you're using a Polish GUI, I'd suggest you first check with a friend or relative to see if they are experiencing the same thing. I've not (yet) seen a similar report in general.

    Com surrogate:
    Various fixes abound if you search for "COM Surrogate not responding"
    COM Surrogate Has Stopped Working: Full Guide to Fix the Problem
    - these suggest a possible problem enumerating video file types related to codecs.
    Have you made any video-related changes?

    Option 3 here:
    Rebuild Search Index in Windows 10
    will reset the indexed locations to default, and hopefully allow you to experiment with reconfiguring your indexed locations and file types to see if you can identify a file type to which this problem is linked by experiment and elimination.


    Otherwise you can try Tweaking.com's free repair tool, selecting only repairs related to services. (easily found with e.g. Google).

    If that doesn't help, you could perform an in-place upgrade repair install which keeps all progs and data.

    - however my instincts suggest a file type specific issue caused by your configuration which this wouldn't fix.

    Solved


    Hi, just found solution for my problem.
    Using a small but great applications from NirSoft "WhatIsHang" and "AppCrashView" , I found all modules related to freezing proces. Between all system modules there was one related to Alcohol 120% (virtual drives and burning soft) which was weird to me. So I uninstalled the program completely and like a charm everything back to normal.

    Good work - Nir Sofer's utilities are remarkable. My guess at the start that it could be a program you had installed proved right.
    perhaps a particular program common to both.

    I had the exact same problem. After uninstalling Virtual Clone Drive (similar program to Alcohol 120), I was able to open the file type dialog again. Thanks for the nudge into the right direction.
