    Reopen Apps after reboot/update etc

I'm looking at possibly coming back from OS X to Win10. (1909 I believe)

I've reset my Win10 machine & am setting back up, but one of the things I really like about OS X is when I have to reboot, all of my Apps that are active on my system, all reopen automatically, on the correct virtual desktops, and the same size/order etc that they were when I rebooted.

After searching for a Windows method to do this (I notice most people seem to actually want to switch this off), the solution seems to be SETTINGS/ACCOUNTS/SIGN IN OPTIONS/Use my sign-in info to automatically finish setting up my device & reopen my apps after an update & restart.

Trouble is, it doesn't really seem to be working for me.

So far, I've set up Chrome, Microsoft News, Calendar, Sky Go and a couple of others, but the only app that actually reopens is Chrome.

Am I doing it wrong? Have I missed something?

If there's no working solution in Windows, is there a 3rd party app that might do it for me?

Hi, this tutorial may be of interest - but note carefully the build numbers to which it applies.
Turn On or Off Automatically Restart Apps after Sign In in Windows 10

    also this, for interest:
Turn On Restore previous folder windows at logon in Windows 10

Older discussion, where it seems that some people experienced this when it wasn't really intended to be a feature - which explains why people were wanting to stop it happening (I hope I'm interpreting this enormous thread correctly):
When restarting pc all programs/windows still remain open, how to stop

Thanks for the reply. That article seems to be for an older version 18963 (I'm on 1909).

The only option I have in it;s place is the one I mentioned above (SETTINGS/ACCOUNTS/SIGN IN OPTIONS/Use my sign-in info to automatically finish setting up my device & reopen my apps after an update & restart) which doesn't seem to work for me - only Chrome seems to reopen (and even that doesn't open to the correct size that it was before the reboot).

Actually it says Starting with at least Windows 10 build 18963

i.e. it's applicable to builds starting with that and thereafter.

18963 is build 20H1 - i.e. future build (or presently Insider).

    Yes, I understand that.

My point is that it doesn't work?

I can close my machine down with Chrome, Calendar, Sky Go, Edge, Microsoft News, App Store all open, but after reboot, only Chrome & Edge reopen, and even those apps, reopen in different places, and different size windows.

I guess, I'm asking that if the Windows method doesn't work, does anyone know of a third party app that might do it for me?

If you're on 1909, which is OLDER than 20H1, you can't expect the tutorial to work.

If you want that feature, you can join the Insider program and use that build.

Perhaps what you are seeing is something like what was reported in the earlier thread.

No, nothing known of any other way-- and given it's coming in the next build of windows, I can't imagine anyone putting effort into such a thing.

You could, of course, use hibernation, and get everything back as it was when you put your machine into hibernation.

    I apologise, I miss-read this - I assumed 18963 was older than 1909. Thanks for clarifying it.

Pretty sure I signed up to Insider a few years back, as I keep getting emails, so I'll look into it now. Thanks again.

Thanks for the idea. I updated to 2004 (19041.113) and I now have the option shown in the tutorial to restart apps.

Sadly, it doesn't make much difference.

Rebooting with Chrome, Calendar, Microsoft News, Edge, Tweeten, Sky Go all open, only Chrome & Edge reopen (wrong size and place on desktop, but do at least reopen). None of the rest do.

I don't think hibernation would work for me. My PC would be left on 100% of the time, and I only ever reboot when needed (System/App crashes, Updates that demand a restart etc).

No apology needed. Build numbers can be confusing.

Once hibernated, you can switch power off.

If I recall what I read about programs relaunching after reboot, the programs themselves have to be written to comply with that feature. That is, only programs containing the appopriate code conforming to the standard will relaunch.

Plus that's an Insider build with no guarantee as to functionality.
