explorer.exe keeps crashing when opening folders - windows 10 pro 1909

    Hi,
my new laptop with win10 64bit on i7 9th generation keeps crashing when opening folders. (windows 10 pro 1909)
It seems that these folders are the ones created after the windows installations. Not all of them but the folders with most files in it will not open. instead explorer.exe crashes and the desktop restarts....
I see this in the event viewer:
tried the most things I found on the web like scan disk sfc scannow, security settings, … nothing helps.
Removed all installed software and virusscanner but still the same problem

    Hi, please try the following:
    a. in Safe mode- do you see the same thing?
    b. Create a new user for test purposes, log in in normal mode. Do you see the same thing?
    c. Download, install and run Shellexview (free).
Use that to disable all non-MS extensions. (Do not disable MS ones).
Do you see the same thing?

Are you saying that file explorer will open some folders, but not others?

    my new laptop
Was file explorer ok when you first got this?

Which Windows build did the laptop come with? (Have you received an upgrade since you bought it?)

Have you been using disk imaging routinely so you can readily get back to a previous good state without technical help? Members here continually recommend this. E.g. Macrium Reflect (free-paid) + external storage for image files.

    Hi,
When creating a new user I don't have the problem.
I disabled all extentions with Shellexview but I have the same problem with the main user.

The problem was not there when the laptop was new, it started after copying the data folders from old to new laptop. (c:\data\*.*)
I can open program files folders without problem. only when the new folders are opened I see the problem. (and only the big ones with a lot of files in it.)

Just to be sure, please confirm you can open those same folders when logged in as a new user.

If so, that's a problem specific to your user account, and general repairs such as those you tried or an in-place upgrade repair install will not fix it.

Given the laptop is new, how difficult would it be to use the new account instead?

Hi, with a new user I can open the folders.
it's not that simple since a lot of software is already installed for the main user and I want to know why this is happening.
I don't want to create new users every time this happens again .

I can't tell you what you did to your user profile that's done this. I'd be completely guessing as to why explorer is crashing.

It is precisely for these reasons - and to cover what you say- that members continually advise the routine use of disk imaging.

Do you have a disk image you could restore? It sounds as if you've made many changes without any such images.

If not, I suggest you start now, and migrate to the new user account. You say you've uninstalled most of the programs anyway.

This is what I do in configuring a PC:
    a. Clean install Windows
    b. As early as possible create my first disk image
    c. Install some progs, make changes, keeping a simple text record.
    d. Update my disk image
    e. Repeat c,d
    f. After a build upgrade start from (a).

That way I can revert to a previous good state, and repeat my steps if something goes wrong.

Could you check the Startup files with your Username profile?
Right click on the Taskbar - Task Manager - More details - Startup. disable the unnecessary items. Restart you PC.
    If the above doesn't fix the problem. Do the following;

Start - Run; type ; (msconfig) - go to Services tap, check to hide all Microsoft Services, and check the remaining list and look for suspicious items. Uncheck mark them then restart your PC. You could enable them later anytime if you want.

    Let see how it goes

See if thumbnail of a file is damaged this can cause File Explorer to crash.

You said this happened when you copied in files from your old system.

Any chance that within the copies you copied in some existing junction points.

So if you look at the documents you copied in is there an entry for My Documents or even just Documents.

Might suggest you use a boot disk like Kyhi's and delete all that you copied in.

Then copy data back in watching that you do not copy in Windows Junction points with the name like Documents, Music, My Documents etc.

By all means copy in the files within these libraries.
