New Lenovo ThinkCentre - Windows 10 Won't Go To Sleep

I got a new Lenovo M90n-1 with Windows 10 Home (1909). I cannot get this device to go to sleep with a defined time. I could select Sleep from the Start Menu or my keyboard Sleep key and it will sleep (or Standby???) but if I set Sleep in Power Options for 45 minutes or whatever, the device will not go to sleep.

This device has a SSD and the bios is set for Modern Standby. The report from Powercfg /energy shows that this device does not support sleep states S1, S2, or S3. The report also doesn't show any issues where something may be preventing this device from entering sleep.

Anyone know how to fix this?

I have some additional info. If I have a time set for Sleep and a time set for Hibernate, Hibernate won't even happen. If I set Sleep to Never, then Hibernate will work at expected. However, in event viewer, I see the system entered Sleep followed one second later with System exited Sleep...even though it went into Hibernate.

Does your manual have a section on Sleep / Standby?

Thanks for the reply. The system only came with a quick start guide and there is no mention of Sleep functionality. It came with Modern Setup in the BIOS. It can't be changed to S3 unless the OS is re-installed. So that leaves me with S0 (Modern Standby), S4 (Hibernate), and Fast Startup. When I push the Sleep button on my keyboard or if I select Sleep in the Shut Down menu, I believe it is going into S0. That's what probably should be happening when Sleep is activated with my 30 minute setting...but it does nothing. Worse than that, if Sleep is set for any time, I can't even get Hibernate to kick off.

I also have a Modern Standby device - a tablet.

There is no fault to fix. Modern Standby devices are designed to achieve about the same level of power saving in S0 Modern standby that other devices need S3 sleep to achieve. That's why there is no 'normal' sleep mode such as S3.

Like you I also once tried to tell it to sleep but later found out that it was not doing so. It was just doing its normal thing of going into S0 when I used the sleep command. My Power options are now just set to Sleep - Never.

I don't recall having a hibernate problem.
- But I can remember getting confused about what was happening when I first tried to figure out how best to use Power options on the new device. Perhaps, before I set my Power options as they are now, my confusion was that hibernate and the Power options sleep after setting were fighting each other.
- Hibernate is enabled and it does work but it does not appear in Power options [I only see the turn off display & sleep entries there but hibernate is shown in the power section of the Start menu].

Going to or resuming from S0 leaves records in Event viewer if you want to investigate it further

Thanks Denis. Do you see those power events in event viewer only when you manually push the sleep button? That's the only time that I see them. The system will stay awake all night if I don't manually push sleep.

No, not only then. The one I gave you the Event viewer entries for are those generated whenever the computer decides to go into S0 as well as when I press the Sleep 'button' in my Start menu. I think 'the computer decides' actually means 'the bios decides' as I am not aware of anything in Windows UI that affects that decision.

I have just rechecked this para & retested the Event viewer entries. Exactly one minute after I stopped fiddling with the tablet, Event viewer recorded, "The system is entering connected standby - Reason: Idle Timeout."

I also have another couple of sleep/hibernate/wakeup 'Custom views' set in Event viewer.

#1 is useful for seeing when the device goes into & resumes from hibernation.
#2 is a bit of duplication. On another computer I only bother looking at this one but I always copy Event viewer Custom view definitions to them all.

I left out a bit in my last post. My hibernation entry is shown in Power options, [current plan - Balanced], Advanced. I have it set to something stupid like a couple of hours - it's just there in case the tablet gets woken up without my knowledge by, say, a Windows update [which are normally blocked]. I also have an AlwaysOn power plan that has hibernation set for Never.

After my last post I searched for your model and I can see that it is a MiniPC with umpteen useful USB connections and a DisplayPort connection. I've made some notes about it because this is the sort of computer I will need to consider when a particular one of my laptops dies [it is 10 years old but still stumbling on].
- It is permanently desk-bound because it is my TV recorder, it uses an external monitor & it has an external keyboard.
- I also have a main laptop and a spare in the form of a tabet-with-integral-keyboard.
- When the TV recorder does give up the ghost I will feel no particular need to replace it with another laptop so reading the specs of yours was of great interest.
- Do you yet have any experience of using it with a TV tuner to record programmes?
- Do you yet have any experience of playing SD / HD video files onto an external monitor?

Thanks Denis. Sorry, I haven't used it as a TV tuner. I have briefly played some .mp4s on it...but mainly just to verify that they are not corrupt. I can hear the fan speed up when it needs to cool...like when I open a browser with 4 start pages that it has to load at once. It's a nice small desktop. I just purchased the Core I3 and it works well for what I use it for...Internet connectivity.

I may have resolved the sleep issue. Last night it went to sleep on it's own. I'll need to see how it behaves the next couple of nights to be sure. I ran the Windows 10 Power Troubleshooter. It found three issues...

1) "Sleep after" was too long ... it brought it down to 10 minutes
2) "Turn off display after" was not set ... it set it for 10 minutes
3) "Turn off hard disk after" was not set ... it set it for 1 minute

I'm not sure which issue corrected the problem. I don't think Sleep after 45 minutes was the issue. It may have been Turn off display set to never. On my Dell, this doesn't cause an issue. The Lenovo may have a problem with it in Modern Standby. Turn off hard disk after was not even shown in my settings. I had to "add" it to see what the troubleshooter set it for.

It got set for 1 minute. I don't know if this is needed or recommended with a SSD. Maybe that's why Lenovo removed the setting. I have to research the best setting for this on a SSD.

The other think that is working now is the power light pulse. Before, when I put the computer to sleep with the sleep button, the power light didn't change. Now, the power light pulsates...so I know at a glance that the computer is sleeping.

Another thing I would like to sleep is the NIC. When the PC is asleep, the lights are flashing all night long. Anyone know how to force the NIC to sleep or turn it off during sleep?

If the fault is fixed it is because of something you have changed. I've always regarded the Windows Power Troubleshooter as a waste of time because, as you have discovered, all is ever wants to do is argue with you about "Sleep after" was too long and the others settings you have chosen.

If there is a simple solution for the NIC it will be
Device manager,
Network adapters,
[select your NIC],
double-click,
Power management tab,
set the checkbox for Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power.
