I am trying to set up a surface Pro 4 for my wife. I have Windows 10 on my desktop but the start screen only appears when I click on the "start" button.
The same thing happens whether I am in the tab mode are not.

That does sound like the behavior you see when tablet mode is turned on.

I really messed up! You're it exactly correct – when I turned off the tablet mode and rebooted– the start screen doesn't display until I specifically ask for it. (I had turned off the tablet mode previously and the start screen still displayed – I had never rebooted so the PC was still "stuck" in tablet mode).
Is there any way to force Windows 10 search screen to not display (all the time) in tablet mode?
I have a program that displays various scenic pictures as the desktop but with the start screen displayed its necessary to hold on the Windows icon then choose the desktop – extra actions.
