Keyboard Keeps Changing - Please Help

For five days now my keyboard keeps on changing to some weird configuration.

apostrophes are transposed, closing parentheses have a slash - eg /)
question marks have a plus - eg +?

and it ' s doing my head in!

I solved it with windows button plus space bar to flip back to the US keyboard layout. Then did CTRL SHIFT to ..... to whatever .......... somehow it worked.

The next day it did not work despite numerous attempts then suddenly did.
The next day again........no idea how I actually fixed it but somehow I did.
Yesterday, I fixed it by updating firefox - weird but true!!!!
    Today.............well.................I don' t know.

I can fix the apostrophe problem by remembering to type a space before an apostrophe but damn it, (!!!!! ) I shouldn't have to and I shouldn' t have to reinsert a cursor and backs pace to get rid of the slash before a parenthesis.

    I'm using Windows 10 Version 18362.665

Go to Settings/Time and Language/Region first make sure you are in Your region. Next go to Language on the left panel. Click the link choose an input method to always use as default. Select your desired input language.

Once you have it back working the way you need you could disable the keyboard shortcuts that have caused your problems by changing layouts inadvertently.

    Settings,
    Devices,
    Typing,
    Advanced keyboard settings,
    Input language hot keys,
    Advanced key settings tab,
    Change key sequence,
Set Switch input language to Not assigned,
Set Switch keyboard language to Not assigned,
    OK,
    OK.

    Thanks guys. I
have already tried all of these things again and again and again and again and again.

Yesterday, using Crap Cleaner seemed to fix it instantly. It was great. Then I went to work, did a night shift, came home, turned it on and again..............the same shit is happening.

I have not inadvertently changed anything. It is set to US Keyboard and US English. There can't be a conflict with that yet..........here I am...................every time I fix it it unfixes itself.

I can only conclude that Windows 10 is persecuting me or I have some sort of virus and the only way to solve it is move ot Ubuntu and never, ever have anything to do with Windows again. It's come to this.

There is no logic, no rationale, no reason for this to be ha ppening and no way to fix it in a logical and consistent way.

Windows Key plus Spacebar worked one day if I followed it with CTRL SHIFT. That only worked once.
Updating Firefox fixed it the next day. Cleaning the registry using CCleaner fixed it yesterday.

Seriously! WTF! WHY THE HELL IS THIS HAPPENING+?

    Brad,

I had originally expected you to respond that you did not know those hotkeys could be turned off and that you think you were probably inadvertently using them whilst typing.

If those switch language hotkeys are reappearing & the keyboard being re-assigned without any explicit action on your part then if you have been using CCleaner to change Registry contents then perhaps CCleaner is the cause of the whole problem.

The thing is, I hadn't used it until yesterday afternoon. Trust me, I'd LOVE THAT to be the problem because then I'd have the problem nailed down, identified and comprehensible.

Once you know what the problem is you can sort it.

All I have are symptoms that mimic a conflict between language and keyboard layout but actually aren't a result of that conflict. Yesterday I was about ready to smash my computer in frustration. I don't know if I'm too tired after a night shift today or I've just resigned myself to this situation and the idea of eventually moving to Ubuntu.

And........how completely weird! Look what I can suddenly type without adding spaces.................."it's" "it's" "it's" ?????????)))))))

Fabulous! The apostrophes aren't transposing. The parentheses don't have a slash put in front of them. 10 doesn't look like this 1/0 when I type just 1 and 0 and the question mark doesn't have a plus sign added to it.

Okay..............AGAIN the problem is fixed..............Yay.............except for how long and what happened to resolve it?

I tried the Windows Spacebar and Ctrl with Shift numerous times before coming back to see if there was a reply and it didn't solve the problem. But now the problem is solved..............for the time being.

Thanks for replying by the way. I appreciate it.

It would be nice to nail this down and solve it once and for all. I don't trust my computer not to take itself back to Apostrophe Flipsville.

Honestly, this is incomprehensible. It's just so bloody well weird.

Just one thought but it is speculative. Many computer maker's include a utility that affects the keyboard [as well as other things].
    - On my Dells it is QuickSet.
    - Is it possible that reinstalling that utility would overwrite whatever the fault is?

Similarly, if there is a speciific keyboard driver then perhaps reinstalling that would also help [but most keyboards are now just running on Windows-provided drivers so I don't suppose the chances are high].

Do you have a system restore point to before the keyboard went amuck?

The driver troubleshoot thingy alleges that the driver is working.

I tried uninstalling the driver anyway a few days ago with the result that the keyboard didn't work.

So, I turned the computer off then on again and the driver reinstalled or reinitialized or did it's Lazarus thing and the keyboard worked but with the exact same problem.

Anyway, last night's night shift is catching up with me. I'm off to bed and I'll worry about it and rant at the computer again tonight or tomorrow.

    thanks for your support.
