    Marc,

Can I safely back out of the installation?
At the moment, yes because it has not started doing anything yet. Proceeding beyond this point forces you to continue until completion.

I think you are at tutoral step 12 just before choosing step 13 [bios] or step 14 [uefi]. If you read steps 13 & 14 you'll see that you need to select each entry in the disk until it shows "Unallocated space" and then it will let you proceed.
    - There are a pair of side by side diagrams at the end of step 14 that probably matches what you are looking at now.
    - When you delete the partitions you'll eventually see the same as the first diagram in step 14 [which is the same as the diagram in step 13] and then you can click on Next which starts the installation itself [Step 15].

I was able to back out and restart my PC from the flash drive by booting into it from the start up screen. Everything is working fine and whoami is users/marc not Administrator.
I'm going to mark this thread solved. I probably could have gotten by with out a clean install and saved my app etc. But...
As a side note. For years the mouse on this PC was very jumpy but not enough to be unusable but I always noticed it and went through several mice trying to fix it. I immediately notice that it was different after the clean install. That alone was worth the effort.
Thanks to everyone that pitched in.

Yes, but you wouldn't have learned so much along the way.

Well done for getting there in the end, in the long run it's always safest to start with a clean install.

    And another thing

    Marc,

Since you are probably knackered I thought I’d extract the bits of the thread that you should consider when you have sufficient enthusiasm. I’ve added information about Repair installs that I did not want to explain before because it would have been a distraction at the time.

    1 Anti-malware action

    - I'd suggest a WD "offline scan" as soon as installation is complete.
Windows Defender Offline Scan - TenForumsTutorials
    - Before restoring your backups afterwards, give the backup disk a full antimalware scan.
How to Scan with Windows Defender - TenForumsTutorials

    2 User accounts

2.1 The user account you create during installation will have admin status. You can call it whatever you want. Give it a decent password and write that password down then keep it somewhere secure yet accessible [mine are on a piece of paper in a small tube attached to my keyring]. It will be a local account [if you install without an internet connection] and that is a good thing as it is simple.
2.2 As soon as you have completed installation, make a spare admin account in Settings, My family & other animals - Add Local Account or Microsoft Account - TenForums make it an admin account as well. Give it a decent password and write that password down as well. If your normal user account ever gets corrupted then you'll be able to get into the computer using this spare one.
2.3 We should all use a standard account for day-to-day tasks but I don't bother and many other people don't bother. If you are going to use an admin account as your day-to-day account then change "UAC" to its highest level - see Change User Account Control level - TenForumsTutorials
2.4 If you are going to want to use an MSAccount then you can change one of those accounts to be an MSAccount now.
2.5 Notice that the Built-In Admin account will not appear at your login screen - it is disabled by default.
2.6 If you want to bypass login then use netplwiz - see Sign in User Account Automatically - TenForumsTutorials

    3 System images

Make a system image and make a fresh one every so often. Macrium Reflect Free is often recommended in this forum and there is plenty of help available here for it.
Backup and Restore with Macrium Reflect - TenForumsTutorials
    Macrium Software Macrium Reflect Free
    Macrium USB - TenForums
Macrium Reflect KnowledgeBase - user guide [version-independent link]
I use Acronis TI not Macrium Reflect so I cannot provide any help for it.

    4 Firefox bookmarks - Backup & restore

Restore bookmarks from backup or move them to another computer - Firefox Help
    - This procedure covers all Bookmarks.
    - I have used this procedure successfully. I can remember being baffled by not being able to see the same dialog as they show but it turned out that I was looking at my Bookmarks list having got there by a difference route. Once I got there by the route they specified, I was fine.
    - I use the json part of the procedure [Backup, Restore] rather than the html method [Import / Export].

    5 Backup drivers

See Backup and Restore Device Drivers in Windows 10
In short - In an admin command prompt, run this command but using the path to a convenient folder
    Dism /online /export-driver /destination:\Desktop\DriverBackup
    - Then you will be able to cope in the future with any non-MS drivers that Windows updates incorrectly
    - I make a new backup after I update any drivers from Dell’s website
    - The folder I actually use is in the form D:\Desktop\yyyymmdd-DriverBackup and I tend to keep the last couple and only weed out old ones when I’m bored.
    - I make an exception for my printer. I always keep the installation files for my printer because they consist of both drivers & necessary application software. Based on awkward experiences of going round in circles all day, if Windows ever does update a printer driver I assume that the situation can only be fixed by uninstalling then reinstalling the printer completely.

6 Repair installs - for future reference only

6.1 A Repair install [aka In-Place upgrade] is an effective repair tool. It does have side-effects but they are not drastic, primarily that the Build returns to that of the ISO/USB used for the Repair install so the latest Cumulative update & possibly some small updates will then need to be reinstalled.
6.2 A Repair install is also a convenient method of running a Version update. So when Version 2003 or whatever comes out you can download its ISO & make a ‘new’** installation USB then run it as a Repair install to update the computer to the latest Version.
6.3 A Repair install was not relevant before because one significant aspect of it is that it does not affect user accounts.
6.4 A Repair install is run from within Windows i.e. you boot normally and then run the setup.exe.
6.5 A Repair install can be run from the installation USB or directly from the downloaded ISO [you mount the ISO by double-clicking on it, it then appears as a drive in File explrer and you can browse it to run its setup.exe just like you could with the installation USB].
6.6 The procedure is in Repair Install Windows 10 with an In-place Upgrade - TenForumsTutorials might help to confirm that this is what is happening.

6.7 ** I once made an installation USB. I now download a new Version ISO [using the Media Creation Tool], mount the ISO and drag its contents into the installation USB. The new files overwrite the old ones and the installation USB is now at the new Version.
    - I often deliberately delete all the installation files & folders on the installation USB before copying across the new ones just out of an unwarranted sense of caution.
    - As long as I don’t reformat it or tamper with the Windows installation files then it keeps its ability to boot despite re-using it this way.
    - I also select all its contents, right-click & make them Hidden. One particular file will remain unhidden and this has to be repeated for it individually. Everything works despite being Hidden.
    - Now that it is all Hidden, I can copy other things onto the installation USB without worrying that I am going to end up deleting anything significant.
    - - On that USB, I have Office 2007 installation files & notes of the Product key for each computer along with installation files for other things I consider crucial.
    - - I keep them all within one folder tree called OtherInstalls so I do not accidentally delete them when I’m cleaning the USB out ready for a new Windows Version.
    - - Do note that I can only do this because I update the Windows Version files by copying from the ISO - if I ‘made’ the installation USB from scratch all my OtherInstalls files would be overwritten.

Thanks again Bree! Painful but valuable.
Denis I did the off line scan (no issues) and will be digging into the rest of the post this weekend (now that I'm a budding Windows 10 expert :) ).

Sign out of the Administrators account, (see attached) do you have the option to Sign In as Marc?
If so, Once signed in as Marc, press the Windows key+R and type netplwiz. and press Enter. Highlight Marc and if you don't want to have to sign in, uncheck the box Users must enter a user name and password to use this computer. Apply and OK type your password twice. Restart. It should automatically boot into the Marc profile.

Went through the steps anyway just to see. I'm the only user name and in a group labeled 'Administrators'.

    Marc,

Being in the group Administrators [as reported by net user <UserName>] is correct and indicates that the account has admin status.

My references to caution about names is that Administrator [singular] is not a group but the UserName of the Built-In Admin account.

I generally write Admin or admin when I'm referring to any old account that has admin status.
I generally only write the word Administrator [singular] in full if I'm deliberately referring to the Built-In Admin account.
But that's just my habit in the hope that it helps me avoid mistakes.

So you haven't yet had a chance to create a spare password-protected Admin local user account - in my para 2 User accounts of my post #54 above?

    It is well worth doing.
