Surely its not illegal to make archived copies etc -- you aren't PIRATING this stuff --you've already PAID for the material -- Seems that the Courts might have a hard time persuing this if the material is paid for and for your own consumption -- I mean if this law really meant what you seem to think it says wouldn't that make copying ANYTHING illegal that you've PAID FOR even for your own use only. --BONKERS but who am I really to comment on how other jurisdictions pass their laws.

I do 100% agree though any use for PIRACY / abuse of intellectual copyright should be punished severely with stiff penalties.

The law makes the reasonable assumption that by removing the encryption you are not backing up what you purchased but creating a New format of the copyright material. It can also be "upsetting" to those companies who manufacture the devices used for legitimate playback of the original protected media - and they pay for a licence for the decryption system which can make up a considerable percentage of the cost of hardware to the end user.

It comes back in the end to the idea that the end user licences the right to use the original disk on suitable licenced equipment, anything else can be a seen breach of the law, and the big companies can afford better legal teams than joe public

To make my answer short, Under fair use one can make a backup copy of their DVDs. What is illegal is to circumvent the copy right protection. It is also illegal to sell software or hardware that will circumvent the copy right protection.

...some old family videos I created a few years back which are written to DVD...
