Taskbar Icon is incorrect - showing an icon for another applicaton

Windows 10 Pro, v1909, desktop. I uninstalled firefox & when I rebooted all my apps that were pinned to the taskbar were gone except 2. I opened C:\Users\user\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Quick Launch\User Pinned\TaskBar and they were all there so I rebooted and they were still gone so I repinned all of them to the taskbar again.

    - Adobe Acrobat Reader DC shows the icon for Windows Photo Viewer in the taskbar whether it is pinned or not.
    - The Adober Acrobat Reader shortcut is showing the correct Adobe Acrobat Reader icon
    - Default app for Photo Viewer is the Windows Photo Viewer
    - Default app for file type pdf is Adobe Acrobat Reader
    - Running Adobe Acrobat Reader or double clicking a pdf file shows the correct Adobe Acrobat Reader icon in the upper left corner of the app window, but the icon on the taskbar is the Windows Photo Viewer icon

I had this exact problem before either on this machine or my laptop, but I can't remember how I fixed. Can't remember if I deleted the iconcache* files or the thumbcache* files in the C:\Users\david\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\Explorer directory or did something else. I just remember it was a pain.

Anyone have an idea how to fix this.

When I've had this problem I have always failed to fix the individual problems you are describing so I just removed the problem icons and built it all up again -
    - made copies on my Desktop of all the correct shortcuts that I would want on my Taskbar afterwards,
    - right-clicked on every wrong icon on the Taskbar & selected Unpin from taskbar,
    - restarted the computer,
    - used the Desktop copies to re-pin what I wanted on the Taskbar.

Denis, that's pretty much what I did. I copied all the shortcuts from C:\Users\user\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Quick Launch\User Pinned\TaskBar to the desktop, deleted the ones in the C:\Users\user\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Quick Launch\User Pinned\TaskBar directory and then repinned to the taskbar. All the shortcuts pinned to the taskbar including the Adobe Acrobat Reader DC, except it has the problem I described above in the original post. It has the icon from a different app in the taskbar, whether pinned or unpinned.

With the icon on the desktop, right click on the icon, then left click on properties. Left click on Change Icon. Hopefully, you'll see the original one. Just click on it. (edit) seem to have the same image twice and can't delete either one. Or i'm just seeing double.

I regarded them as all suspect and got / made clean copies of the shortcuts so that I was not carrying any faults over.
I also use the normal Taskbar right-click to unpin them rather than deleting them from the AppData folder.
And I rebooted before putting them back on.

Clicking on the Change Icon button shows the original (correct) icon and selecting it and applying it again has no affect on the icon showing in the task bar.

The icons were missing from the task bar but the shortcuts were still there in the appdata folder, so I just moved from the appdata folder and repinned. All worked including the Adobe Acrobat Reader DC shortcut. It just has the wrong icon on the taskbar.

Try copying an Adobe Acrobat Reader DC shortcut from elsewhere or making one yourself then ditching the contaminated one.

Denis, Sorry. I responded a bit too quickly before I realized what you were asking me to do. That triggered my memory of how I fixed this exact same problem before with the Adobe Acrobat Reader DC taskbar icon.

Turns out the Start Menu\Programs shortcut had the wrong icon (Change Icon grayed out). All the others were correct. I deleted all the existing shortcut icons, Start Menu\Programs, User Pinned\Taskbar, etc. and created a new shortcut from the exe in Program Files (x86). Pinned with the correct icon and copied to Start Menu\Programs and User Pinned\Taskbar and all is well.

I'm going to document the solution this time in case it happens again since this is twice now.

    Really appreciate your help here.
