Long boot time and passwords missing

    There are a few things which aren't quite right on this PC.

    To be frank, I no longer have the patience to wrestle with recalcitrant software, whatever the reason.

    I am going to save my important files, buy another refurbished machine, and ditch this one.

    Why ditch it? You can backup your data and then format it (clean installation of Windows 10). A clean install with the appropriate drivers installed is much faster than an old system. You can try and see before you buy anything new. Also replacing the hard disk with an SSD will make a huge difference.
