how do i unlock a file or folder so i can move it

    Howdy,

i often cannot move a folder to another location because windows says it's currently in use in another program. i checked and closed all programs. still the same error.

i downloaded a cool program named "Lockhunter - a foolproof file unlocker". It sits in the 'right-click' and it usually unlocks files and folders, which i can then move to another location. But sometimes it cannot unlock a file/folder and it says "some processes are still locking it."

If i just try and drag and drop the folder to another location, Windows says the file or folder is open in another application. Which App?

The folder is synced with Onedrive so i paused Onedrive to see if i could move the folder. no.

how can i identify what's locking a file or folder and then unlock it so i can move that file / folder?

    Thanks Guys.

@Funjunkie6 : I wonder if the download is still blocked?

Please read through this tutorial to see if the Lockhunter download file is still locked:

Thanks for your response, Golden, but the folder is Locked not Blocked.

i assume this is a Onedrive sync issue, but i dont know how to rectify it. i Paused Onedrive sync, but that\ did not unlock the folder.

Thanks for clarifying the block v lock issue - I agree it is indeed a lock issue, and seems related to OneDrive.

Does the problem occur with files that are both already synced, and files that are pending sync?

Yes, the problem does occur with files that are both already synced and files that are pending sync.

Does the "Whats locking this file?" option in LockHunter identify any processes that might be holding on to the file/s?

Sorry for the interruption Funjunkie6 but I needed to thank @Golden for the Reputation comment given for another thread.

I didn't find any other way to thank you Golden as your Private Message system is either set to not receive or you just don't accept them.

    However, thanks again.

And sorry again @Funjunkie6 for the interruption.

OK. Definitely OneDrive that is the issue, but Im not sure why. I'll see if I can find someone more knowledgeable about OneDrive to help.

Edit : I've sought some additional help from our other users.
