Move icon database file from Windows 7 to Windows 10

    Hello,

First post here after years of tweaking Windows 7. Hope I like 10 as much I did 7...

This weekend I'm doing a clean install of Windows 10 Pro after years of using Windows 7 Pro. Over time I created many custom folder icons.

I'm trying to find a way to carry those icons from 7 to 10.

I'm wondering whether if by inserting the IconCache file from the location in Win 7 to the correct location in Win 10 I'll see these icons once I'm up and running W10.

Move icon database file from Windows 7 to Windows 10-2020_0214_icon-db.jpg

These are mostly folder icons used for folders on storage drives that will have the same drive letters.

Will this work? Or is there another or better way to make this happen?

I'm new to W10; expect to have other questions in the coming days.

Thanks for any help anyone can provide.

Make a backup and give it a try.

    That folder contains
Move icon database file from Windows 7 to Windows 10-screenshot-954-.png
    C:\Users\%UserName%\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\Explorer

So it looks as though the whole approach is different.

    Your workaround could be to
1 copy your db to a folder that you can refer to when setting up shortcuts or drive icons, or
2 extract them as .ico files and put them in a folder that you can refer to when setting up shortcuts or drive icons.

Personally, I'd protect the folder in the same way as is done in the annex to Make Task scheduler run a batch file minimised and with a specific icon - TenForums

I have custom icons and they stay upon the clean install as long as the original location is unchanged.

Just make sure to backup those custom shortcuts of course.

Thanks, Denis. I'll look at that once I'm up on Win10.

This what I'm hoping will happen. In terms of backing up the custom shortcuts, what are you suggesting be backed up?

Before I close out Win 7 I'll have a complete file back up of my Win7 AppData. Is this what you mean (the dB file)?

Thank you both for your helpful replies.

Make a system image of the OS drive. Macrium Reflect [free] is a commonly recomemnded choice in this forum and there is plenty of help available here for it.

I use Acronis TI not Macrium Reflect so I cannot provide any help for it.

The primary purpose of a system image is to restore it if the system cannot function later on but you can also mount & then browse the system image to retrieve individual files.

Copying / backing up individual files [and all your own files] is also required but that can be done with a variety of utilities including simple file copying / RoboCopy / ... .

Thanks, Denis. I use Acronis and have a backup done this morning, which I can mount if needed (hoping I won't need to).

I've used Cobian backup for years and have current backups of everything. I've always kept virtually nothing on my boot drive, but am running a boot drive docs/app data backup before I close Win 7 for last time. My Outlook .psts are in my Docs.

To complete my previous statement, I meant the original location of .ico files.
I believe, that the ico's location is saved within the shortcut's properties itself.
So you need to backup shortcuts and place .ico files to the referenced folder.
If 10 can not find them, it will probably reset them and will use default icons.
